The best heat in a power outage is the furnace you already own. A gas furnace only needs electricity for its blower and controls, about 600 W running and 1,800 W for the second it starts. A dual fuel inverter generator like the Westinghouse iGen2550DFc ($500 to $1,000) runs it, and so does a 2 kWh power station for about 6 hours.

No gas furnace, or no way to power it? Use an indoor-safe propane heater like the Mr. Heater Buddy (under $100). It has a low oxygen shutoff and puts out up to 9,000 BTU, enough for a room of about 225 sq ft. Run it with a window cracked and a battery CO alarm in the room. Never put an unvented heater in a bedroom.
For sleeping, use an electric blanket on a power station. A blanket draws about 100 W and cycles about half the time, so it averages 50 W. A 1 kWh station keeps it warm for about 17 hours. A 1,500 W space heater drains the same station in about 35 minutes flat out, so skip that plan.

Best: run your gas furnace on backup power
A gas furnace makes its heat from gas. The power only runs the blower, the igniter and the control board. That load is small, about 600 W running and about 1,800 W for a second at start.
A furnace blower cycles with the thermostat, about half the time on a cold night, so it averages about 300 W. Take the station's watt-hours x 0.85 for inverter losses and divide by 300. A 1 kWh unit runs it about 3 hours, a 2 kWh unit about 6 hours, and a 4 kWh unit about 12 hours.
A small generator does it all night. The Westinghouse iGen2550DFc runs about 11 hours at quarter load on its 1.1 gal tank. Use an inverter generator, since furnace control boards want clean power.
Most furnaces are hardwired. To power one, an electrician installs an interlock kit and inlet box, or a transfer switch, so you can switch on the furnace circuit. Never backfeed through a dryer outlet. Put a battery CO alarm on every sleeping level and run the generator at least 20 feet from the house.

No power for the furnace? An indoor-safe propane heater
A 1 lb propane cylinder holds about 21,600 BTU of heat. A full 1 kWh power station holds about 2,970 BTU after losses. One small cylinder holds about 7 times the heat of the battery.
Only buy a heater rated for indoor use with an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) and a tip-over shutoff. The Mr. Heater Buddy and Little Buddy have both. The ODS shuts the heater off if oxygen in the room drops.
The rules are not optional. Crack a window or door for fresh air as the manual says. Keep a battery CO alarm in the room. Keep 3 feet clear around it. Turn it off before you sleep, and never use an unvented heater in a bedroom. Many building codes ban it.
Never heat a home with a charcoal grill, a gas grill, a camp stove, a gas oven or a generator. They make carbon monoxide fast, and CO kills people every winter outage.
Mr. Heater 9,000 BTU Portable Buddy Radiant Propane Heater

Sleep warm with an electric blanket on a power station
A blanket heats you, not the room, and that is why it lasts so long on a battery. A typical electric blanket draws about 100 W on high and cycles about half the time, for an average of about 50 W.
The math is capacity x 0.85 / 50. The 1,024 Wh BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 gives about 17 hours, the 1,070 Wh Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 about 18 hours, and the 2,074 Wh Elite 200 V2 about 35 hours. Two blankets halve those numbers.
Plug the blanket straight into the power station. Sunbeam says not to use an extension cord or power strip. A 12V blanket plugs into the station's car outlet and skips the inverter, so more of the battery goes to heat. A heated mattress pad works the same way and keeps the heat under you.
Sunbeam Queen Microplush Electric Heated Blanket, 2 Controllers

Why a 1,500 W space heater on a battery is a bad idea
A 1,500 W heater on a 1 kWh station lasts about 35 minutes flat out. The 1,024 Wh Elite 100 V2 has about 870 Wh usable, and 870 / 1,500 = 0.58 hours. With the thermostat cycling it at 60 percent, you get about 1 hour.
That same charge runs an electric blanket for about 17 hours. Even a 6 kWh home battery runs a 1,500 W heater only about 6 hours with cycling. A space heater only makes sense on a generator.
See the full table for 1, 2, 4 and 6 kWh units in our guide on how long a power station runs a space heater.

Frequently asked questions
How do I stay warm in a power outage?
Run your gas furnace on a generator or power station, since its blower needs only about 600 W. Without that, use an indoor-safe propane heater with a CO alarm during the day and an electric blanket on a power station at night. Close off unused rooms and stay in one warm room.
What is the best heater for a power outage?
An indoor-rated propane heater with an oxygen depletion sensor and tip-over shutoff, like the Mr. Heater Buddy. It makes up to 9,000 BTU with no electricity. Use it with a window cracked and a battery CO alarm in the room.
Is it safe to use a Mr. Heater Buddy indoors?
Yes, when you follow the manual. It is approved for indoor use and has a low oxygen shutoff. Give it fresh air as the manual says, keep a battery CO alarm in the room, keep 3 feet clear around it and turn it off before you sleep.
Can a generator run a gas furnace?
Yes. A gas furnace blower draws about 600 W running and about 1,800 W to start, so a 2,500 W class inverter generator runs it. Most furnaces are hardwired, so an electrician needs to add an interlock kit and inlet or a transfer switch.
How long will a power station run a furnace blower?
About 3 hours on a 1 kWh unit, 6 hours on 2 kWh and 12 hours on 4 kWh. The math is capacity x 0.85 divided by an average of about 300 W, since the blower cycles about half the time.
How long will a power station run an electric blanket?
About 17 hours on a 1 kWh station. A blanket draws about 100 W and cycles about half the time, so it averages 50 W. Capacity x 0.85 / 50 gives the hours.
Can I use my gas oven or grill to heat the house?
No. Gas ovens, stovetops, charcoal grills, gas grills and camp stoves make carbon monoxide that can kill in a closed house. Never use them for heat, and never run a generator in a garage or near a window.
Can a power station run a space heater?
Only briefly. A 1,500 W heater drains a 1 kWh station in about 35 minutes at full output, or about 1 hour with the thermostat cycling. An electric blanket gets about 17 hours from the same charge.
How long does a 1 lb propane cylinder last in a Mr. Heater Buddy?
About 5.4 hours on the 4,000 BTU low setting and about 2.4 hours on the 9,000 BTU high setting. A 1 lb cylinder holds about 21,600 BTU, so 21,600 / 4,000 = 5.4 and 21,600 / 9,000 = 2.4. Ten hours of heat on low takes about two cylinders, so stock them before the storm.
How much does it cost to run an electric blanket?
About 7 cents a night. A blanket that draws about 100 W and cycles half the time averages 50 W, so 8 hours uses 0.4 kWh, and 0.4 kWh x 17.3 cents (the US average rate) is about 6.9 cents. That same 0.4 kWh is under half of the 870 Wh a 1 kWh power station can deliver, which is why a blanket lasts all night on battery.
