How this calculator works
- Cameras. One per outdoor area besides the front door, which the doorbell covers. Apartments get one indoor camera.
- Power. No outlets means battery or solar cameras. Running cable to 3 or more areas means a PoE recorder kit that records 24/7 to its own drive.
- No monthly fees. Every camera and doorbell must store video locally, and the alarm must be one the maker says works without a plan.
- Sensors. One per exterior door and ground-floor window.
- Lock. Renters get one that fits over the existing deadbolt; owners get one with Wi-Fi built in.
Worked examples
House, 2 doors, 6 ground-floor windows, no outlets outside, no monthly fees
- House, owned
- 2 doors, 6 windows
- 3 outdoor areas, no outlets
- No monthly fees, guard dog
3 battery cameras, a doorbell, a lock, an alarm kit with 8 sensors planned, and an electronic watchdog.
Three outdoor areas means three cameras; with no outlets they must be battery or solar, and with no plan they must record locally, which points to three eufy SoloCam E42 solar cameras. The planner keeps everything in one app: the eufy E340 doorbell, the eufy C220 lock and the eufy alarm kit, whose 4 entry sensors plus one eufy 4-pack cover all 8 openings. The STI watchdog is standalone and barks when it senses movement through the door.
House, 5 outdoor areas, willing to run cable
- House, owned
- 3 doors, 8 windows
- 5 outdoor areas, will run cable
- No monthly fees, floodlight
A Reolink 4-camera PoE recorder kit plus one more PoE camera, recording around the clock.
Three or more areas with cable means a recorder kit: 4 wired 4K cameras and a 2 TB drive record 24/7 with no plan. The fifth area gets one more PoE camera on the recorder's spare channels.
Renter in an apartment, plan is fine
- Apartment, renting
- 1 door
- Indoor only
- Plan is fine, patrol robot
An indoor camera, a lock that fits over the existing deadbolt, a small alarm kit and a patrol robot.
Nothing drilled outside: one indoor camera watches the entry, the Yale August lock clamps over the landlord's deadbolt so the keys still work, and a compact alarm kit covers the door. The Enabot EBO is a camera on wheels you drive around from your phone.
Frequently asked questions
How many security cameras do I need for my house?
One per outdoor area you want watched, plus a video doorbell for the front door. A typical house watches the driveway, backyard and one or two side yards, so 3 to 4 cameras and a doorbell.
Can I have home security without a monthly fee?
Yes. Pick cameras and doorbells that record to a microSD card or a local hub, and an alarm the maker says works without a paid plan. You lose professional monitoring and some cloud features, but you still get recordings, alerts and a siren.
How many entry sensors do I need?
One per exterior door and per window someone could reach from the ground. Starter kits include a few, so most houses add a sensor pack.
Do electronic watchdog alarms work?
They play a barking dog sound when they detect movement nearby, which can make a house seem occupied and guarded. They do not record or call anyone, so pair one with cameras or an alarm.
Should I get battery or wired security cameras?
Go by power at each spot. With no outdoor outlets the planner picks battery or solar cameras, which record on motion. If you can run cable to 3 or more areas, it picks a PoE recorder kit that records 24/7 to its own drive with no batteries to charge.
What security setup works for a renter in an apartment?
Nothing that needs drilling outside: one indoor camera watching the entry, a smart lock that fits over the existing deadbolt so the landlord's keys still work, and a small alarm kit for the door. The eufy 5-piece kit includes 2 entry sensors, a motion sensor and a keypad and works without a plan.
What if I have more outdoor areas than cameras in a recorder kit?
Add PoE cameras to the spare channels. The Reolink RLK8-800D4 kit includes 4 cameras on an 8-channel recorder, so a house with 5 outdoor areas adds one more PoE camera and still has 3 channels free.
Do I need professional monitoring for home security?
Not to get a siren and phone alerts, which no-fee kits like abode and eufy provide. Monitoring adds someone who calls for help when the alarm trips, and Ring Alarm and SimpliSafe pair it with cellular backup so the alarm still gets out if your internet is down. Without it, you call 911 yourself from the alert.
Should I put sensors on second-floor windows?
The planner counts ground-floor windows because those are the ones someone can reach. Add a sensor to any upper window reachable from a porch roof, deck or garage roof, and consider a glassbreak sensor for large panes; SimpliSafe's covers glass within 20 ft.
Where should outdoor security cameras go?
One on each approach someone would use: typically the driveway, the backyard and each side yard with a gate. The front door is covered by the video doorbell, so the planner does not add a separate camera there.
