Step 1 of 3

How much floor, on how many levels, and what kind?

Use the total floor area it will clean. Over about 800 sq ft on a level, or on more than one level, a robot that maps rooms cleans in rows and remembers each floor instead of bouncing around.

How this calculator works

Suction numbers are marketing; the features your home needs decide the match.

  1. Mapping. Over 800 sq ft, we require LiDAR or laser navigation so it cleans in rows and remembers rooms.
  2. Self-emptying dock. Required if you pick a hands-off option or have heavy shedding.
  3. Mop. Only if you want one and have hard floors; fully hands-off adds a dock that washes the mop.
  4. Match. Robots with every required feature, ranked by price, plus the most suction for pets or carpet and a mop-washing upgrade when it fits.

Worked examples

1,800 sq ft, mixed floors, a heavy shedder, wants a mop

  • 1,800 sq ft
  • Mixed floors
  • Heavy shedding
  • Vacuum and mop
  • Empties itself

Needs mapping, a self-emptying dock and a mop. Best fit: iRobot Roomba Plus 415x.

Over 800 sq ft calls for room mapping, heavy shedding calls for a dock that empties the bin, and hard floors with mopping call for a mop. Among the robots with all three, the Roomba Plus 415x pairs 20,000 Pa rated suction for hair with a 90-day dock that also washes its mop. The dreame D20 Air Plus is the budget way in (20,000 Pa, a 120-day bag dock, pad mop).

700 sq ft apartment, hard floors, no pets

  • 700 sq ft
  • Mostly hard floors
  • No pets
  • Vacuum only
  • Can empty the bin

No mapping needed. Best fit: ILIFE V2.

A small space cleans fine without laser mapping, so the requirements drop to a working vacuum. The ILIFE V2 runs about 120 minutes from a remote with no app. The iRobot Roomba 105 adds LiDAR if you want room-by-room control.

2,500 sq ft of hard floors, fully hands-off

  • 2,500 sq ft
  • Mostly hard floors
  • A light shedder
  • Vacuum and mop
  • Fully hands-off

Needs a dock that empties the bin and washes the mop. Best fit: dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2.

Fully hands-off means the dock has to empty the bin and wash the mop. At 2,500 sq ft on one level runtime matters too, and the dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 runs up to 231 minutes with 25,000 Pa and a 100-day dock. The Roomba Plus 405 is the budget way in with the same dock features and LiDAR mapping.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need LiDAR on a robot vacuum?

For homes over about 800 sq ft or more than a couple of rooms, yes. A laser-mapping robot cleans in rows, remembers rooms and resumes after recharging. Bump-and-turn robots work in a small apartment but miss spots in bigger homes.

Is a self-emptying robot vacuum worth it?

With shedding pets or if you want to stop touching the robot, yes. Robot bins are small, and heavy pet hair can fill them in one run. A self-emptying dock holds weeks of debris; the maker claims range from about 45 to 120 days in our list.

Does suction (Pa) matter?

Somewhat. Higher rated suction helps on carpet and with pet hair, but makers measure it differently, so compare features first: mapping, dock and mop type matter more to how clean your floors end up.

Are robot vacuum mop combos any good?

They keep hard floors wiped between real mopping. Rotating and roller mops scrub better than a dragged pad, and a dock that washes the mop keeps it from smearing dirt around.

What size robot vacuum do I need for my house?

Robot vacuums are not sized by square feet the way heaters are; floor area decides the features. Over about 800 sq ft, get LiDAR mapping so it cleans in rows and resumes after recharging. Then check runtime: the robots in our list that publish it run from about 90 minutes (Shark AI Ultra) to about 300 minutes (ECOVACS DEEBOT N20e Plus) per charge.

How long does a robot vacuum run on one charge?

Published runtimes in our list range from about 90 to 300 minutes, for example 120 minutes on the ILIFE V2 and 231 minutes on the dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2. Runtime drops on carpet and at higher suction settings. Mapping robots return to the dock, recharge and finish the job where they stopped.

Robot vacuum vs stick vacuum: which do I need?

A robot keeps floors clean day to day without you; a stick vacuum handles stairs, spills, upholstery and spots the robot cannot reach. Many homes use both. If you only buy one and have stairs or lots of rugs with tassels, the stick vacuum does more of the work.

Can a robot vacuum go over rugs and door thresholds?

Most climb low rugs and standard thresholds; check the maker's rated threshold height against yours. Pick up cords and fold rug tassels under, or block them off in the app, because the brush can grab them. A mop-combo robot should lift or remove its mop before it crosses carpet.

Can a robot vacuum clean more than one floor?

Yes, but you carry it. LiDAR robots can store a map for each floor and recognize where they are. The dock stays on one floor, so self-emptying and mop washing only happen there.

Do I need Wi-Fi or an app for a robot vacuum?

No. Simple robots like the ILIFE V2 run from a remote with no app. You need the app and Wi-Fi for maps, room-by-room cleaning, no-go zones and scheduling by room.
