How this calculator works

Air purifiers are rated by CADR, the clean air they deliver per minute. AHAM, the appliance trade group that runs the test, publishes a simple rule: smoke CADR should be at least two thirds of the room's floor area.

  1. Room volume. Square feet x ceiling height.
  2. AHAM minimum. The two-thirds rule equals about 5 air changes an hour at an 8 ft ceiling, so CADR = volume x 5 / 60. That makes taller ceilings count.
  3. Size up for allergies, pets or smoke. We add 25 percent so the purifier reaches the target on a lower, quieter speed. For a bedroom run overnight we add 50 percent so it can stay on its quiet low speed. Both are our planning choices, not AHAM rules.
  4. Match. Only purifiers whose smoke CADR meets your number, ranked by price, then by yearly cost to own.
  5. Cost to own. Electricity = AHAM test watts on high x hours x 365 / 1,000 x your rate. Filters = filter price x 12 / the maker's replacement months. Real use on auto mode costs less.

Why smoke CADR. AHAM tests smoke, dust and pollen. Smoke particles are the smallest, so the smoke number is the lowest and the most demanding. A unit that clears smoke clears the larger particles faster.

Worked examples

Bedroom, 12 x 14 ft, allergies

  • 168 sq ft, 8 ft ceiling
  • Allergies (sized up 25%)
  • 24 hours a day, US average rate

140 cfm smoke CADR. Best fit: Levoit Core 300, about $143 a year to own.

1,344 cu ft x 5 air changes / 60 = 112 cfm, AHAM's minimum. Sized up 25 percent for allergies = 140 cfm. The Levoit Core 300 (smoke CADR 143, under $100) is the cheapest that clears it. On high around the clock it uses about 482 kWh a year ($83) plus two $30 filters, about $143 a year. The Winix A230 (CADR 159) costs about $101 a year because its filter lasts 12 months.

Living room, 15 x 20 ft, pets

  • 300 sq ft, 8 ft ceiling
  • Pets (sized up 25%)
  • 24 hours a day, US average rate

250 cfm. Best fit: Winix 5520. Cheapest to own: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max.

2,400 cu ft x 5 / 60 = 200 cfm, x 1.25 = 250 cfm. The Winix 5520 (CADR 253, $100 to $250) is the cheapest that fits, about $178 a year with its filter. The Blueair 211i Max (CADR 435, $100 to $250) draws only 44 W on high, so it costs about $160 a year and runs quietly on a lower speed in this room.

Open living and dining, 20 x 25 ft

  • 500 sq ft, 8 ft ceiling
  • Allergies (sized up 25%)
  • 24 hours a day, US average rate

418 cfm. Best fit: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max, about $160 a year.

4,000 cu ft x 5 / 60 = 334 cfm, x 1.25 = 418 cfm. Only the Blueair 211i Max (smoke CADR 435) clears that in one unit. 44 W x 24 h x 365 = 385 kWh, about $67, plus about $93 of filters at one $70 filter every 9 months.

Frequently asked questions

What size air purifier do I need?

AHAM's rule is a smoke CADR of at least two thirds of the room's square footage, for an 8 ft ceiling. A 300 sq ft room needs 200 cfm. For allergies, pets or smoke we size up 25 percent so the purifier can do the job on a quieter speed.

What is CADR?

Clean Air Delivery Rate, in cubic feet per minute of filtered air, measured by AHAM for smoke, dust and pollen. Smoke is the hardest test because the particles are smallest, so compare purifiers on the smoke number.

How much electricity does an air purifier use?

From about 7 W for a desk unit to about 109 W for a large Honeywell on high, measured in AHAM's test. A 55 W unit running 24 hours a day uses about 482 kWh a year, about $83 at the US average rate. Lower speeds draw much less.

How much do air purifier filters cost per year?

From about $28 a year (Winix A230, one $28 filter every 12 months) to about $120 (Levoit Core 600S, a $60 filter about every 6 months). Filter cost often beats electricity, so check it before you buy.

Should I run my air purifier all the time?

Yes for allergies and smoke, because the air keeps getting recontaminated. Use auto mode or a low speed when the air is clean. The yearly costs in this tool assume high speed all day, so your real bill will be lower.

Do air purifiers help with wildfire smoke?

A HEPA purifier sized to the room reduces fine particles indoors, which is why the EPA recommends portable air cleaners during smoke events. Size by the smoke CADR and keep windows closed.

What size air purifier do I need for a 12 x 12 bedroom?

About 96 cfm of smoke CADR: 144 sq ft x 8 ft = 1,152 cu ft, x 5 air changes an hour / 60 = 96 cfm, which matches AHAM's two-thirds rule. Sized up 25 percent for allergies or pets it is 120 cfm. The Levoit Core 300 (smoke CADR 143) and the Winix A230 (159) both clear it.

How long does it take an air purifier to clean a room?

At the AHAM minimum of 5 air changes an hour, the purifier moves the room's full volume of air through its filter about once every 12 minutes. In a well-mixed room with no new particles coming in, that cuts a one-time burst of smoke to about 37 percent after 12 minutes and about 14 percent after 24 minutes. A larger purifier or a higher speed shortens those times.

How often should I replace an air purifier filter?

Follow the maker's schedule, which ranges from 6 months (Levoit Core 300, 400S and 600S) to 9 months (Blueair 211i Max) to 12 months (Winix A230 and 5520, Coway AP-1512HH, Airmega 350 and 400). Those intervals assume normal use. Heavy smoke, pets or running on high all day can clog a filter sooner, so replace it early if airflow drops or the filter light comes on.

Does ceiling height change what size air purifier I need?

Yes. AHAM's two-thirds rule assumes an 8 ft ceiling, so this tool sizes by volume instead: square feet x ceiling height x 5 air changes / 60. A 300 sq ft room needs 200 cfm at 8 ft but 250 cfm at 10 ft, 25 percent more.
