How this calculator works
Three numbers decide a robot mower: rated area, slope rating and how it navigates.
- Rated area with headroom. Your grass area times 1.15 for an open lawn, 1.20 with some trees and beds, or 1.30 for a complex yard. Obstacles and edges add turning and slow coverage, so a mower at its rated limit falls behind. The headroom is our planning choice, not a maker rule.
- Slope. The mower's maximum slope rating must meet the steepest part of the lawn.
- Navigation. Under trees, RTK-only mowers can lose the satellite fix. With some trees we require LiDAR, a perimeter wire or an RTK mower with camera backup. With lots of trees the mower must not depend on RTK at all: LiDAR, a wire or camera-only navigation.
- Match. Mowers that pass all three, ranked by price, plus the most slope margin when your yard is steep and a larger one if you want room to grow.
Worked examples
Quarter-acre lawn with a few trees, gentle slope
- 10,890 sq ft of grass
- Gentle slope, up to 20%
- Some trees and beds
Rated for about 0.3 acre with LiDAR or camera help. Best fit: Segway Navimow i215 LiDAR.
10,890 sq ft x 1.20 headroom for trees and beds = 13,068 sq ft, so the 1/4 acre (10,890 sq ft) mowers drop out. Trees also block RTK satellite fixes, so the mower needs LiDAR, a camera or a perimeter wire. The Navimow i215 LiDAR is rated for 16,117 sq ft and 45% slope with LiDAR plus vision, the lowest priced mower that clears all three.
Open 1/8 acre front and back, flat
- 5,445 sq ft of grass
- Flat
- Open lawn
Rated for about 0.14 acre. Best fit: ECOVACS GOAT O1000 RTK.
5,445 x 1.15 = 6,262 sq ft. With clear sky, RTK works fine, which opens up the cheaper RTK mowers. The GOAT O1000 RTK is rated for 1/4 acre and 45% slope, so it has room to spare and finishes sooner.
Half-acre hillside with trees and a side yard
- 21,780 sq ft of grass
- Steep, up to 45%
- Lots of trees and narrow passages
Rated for about 0.65 acre and 45% slope. Best fit: ECOVACS GOAT A3000 LiDAR.
21,780 x 1.30 = 28,314 sq ft for a complex yard. Only mowers rated for at least that area, 45% slope, and with navigation that does not lean on the satellite fix (LiDAR, a boundary wire or camera-only) qualify, because heavy tree cover blocks RTK. The GOAT A3000 LiDAR (32,670 sq ft, 50% slope) is the lowest priced. The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD climbs 80% with all-wheel drive and LiDAR if the steep part is worse than you think.
Frequently asked questions
What size robot mower do I need?
One rated for more than your actual grass area. Makers rate area for an open, simple lawn, so we add 15 percent for an open lawn, 20 percent with some trees and beds, and 30 percent for a complex yard with many obstacles or narrow passages.
What is the difference between RTK, LiDAR and vision robot mowers?
RTK mowers navigate by satellite with a reference station and are accurate to a few centimeters under open sky, but tree canopy and buildings can block the signal. LiDAR mowers map the yard with a spinning laser and cameras recognize grass edges and obstacles, so both cope better under trees. Many current mowers combine two of these.
Do robot mowers still need a perimeter wire?
Most current models do not. They use RTK, LiDAR or cameras with boundaries you draw in an app. Wire-guided mowers still work well under heavy tree cover, but installing the wire takes time.
How steep a slope can a robot mower handle?
Most mowers in our list are rated for 35 to 50 percent. The steep-slope all-wheel-drive models go to 60, 80 and 84 percent. Measure the steepest spot: a 45 percent slope rises 4.5 ft over 10 ft of ground.
Is a robot mower worth it?
It mows several times a week on a schedule, so the grass stays short without bagging, and you stop spending weekend hours mowing. The trade-offs are the upfront cost, an app setup, and edges that may still need a trimmer.
How do I measure my lawn in square feet?
Break the grass into rectangles, multiply length by width for each, and add them up. Count only grass, not the house, driveway, patio or beds, because lot size overstates the mowing area. One acre is 43,560 sq ft, so a quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft and a half acre is 21,780 sq ft. Online satellite map tools with an area measure give a close estimate if you cannot pace it out.
What size robot mower do I need for a half-acre lawn?
A half acre is 21,780 sq ft of grass, which becomes about 25,047 sq ft with 15 percent headroom for an open lawn and 28,314 sq ft with 30 percent for a complex yard. That rules out mowers rated for exactly 1/2 acre and points to models rated for 3/4 acre (32,670 sq ft) or more, such as the ECOVACS GOAT A3000 LiDAR or Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000. Then check the slope rating and, under trees, that it has LiDAR or vision.
Do I need to install an RTK antenna for a robot mower?
Not always. Classic RTK mowers use a reference station mounted with a clear view of the sky, but the WORX Landroid Vision Cloud and Segway Navimow i210 AWD use network or cloud RTK with no antenna to install. LiDAR and vision mowers such as the Segway Navimow i215 LiDAR, ECOVACS GOAT A3000 LiDAR and Dreame A3 AWD Pro need neither an RTK station nor a wire.
What cutting height can a robot mower do?
The mowers in this tool that list it range from as low as 1 in to as high as 4 in, but each model covers only part of that. The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000 tops out at 2.7 in and the Mammotion LUBA 2 AWD 5000HX starts at 2.2 in. Check that the range covers the height you mow at now.
How loud is a robot mower?
The models in this tool that publish a noise rating list 55 to 60 dBA, from 55 dBA for the Sunseeker V3 to 60 dBA for the Sunseeker S4 and X5 AWD. That is far quieter than a gas mower. If you plan early-morning runs, check any local noise rules first.
