How this calculator works
- Pool type. In-ground, above-ground, or rated for both.
- Size. Your floor area from the real shape (rectangle, round or oval) against the maker's rated square feet, or your length against a rated pool length.
- Surfaces. Floor only, floor and walls, or floor, walls and waterline.
- Match. Robots that pass, best fit first, plus an upgrade that cleans one more surface, or a cordless or corded alternative when it adds something.
Worked examples
16 x 32 in-ground pool, floor and walls
- In-ground
- 32 x 16 ft
- Floor and walls
- Corded is fine
Rated for 512 sq ft or more with wall climbing. Best fit: WYBOT B1.
32 x 16 = 512 sq ft. The WYBOT B1 is rated for 1,150 sq ft, climbs walls and runs cordless for about 120 minutes. The WYBOT C1 adds waterline scrubbing, and a corded Dolphin runs as long as needed with no battery to wear out.
24 ft round above-ground pool, floor only
- Above-ground
- Round, 24 ft diameter
- Floor only
- Corded is fine
Rated for 452 sq ft. Best fit: BRINBO S2.
A round pool's floor is pi x radius squared: 3.14 x 12 x 12 = 452 sq ft. Length x width would say 576 sq ft, 27% too much. The BRINBO S2 is rated for 861 sq ft of floor and runs cordless for about 90 minutes.
20 x 40 in-ground pool, waterline, cordless only
- In-ground
- 40 x 20 ft
- Floor, walls and waterline
- Cordless only
Rated for 800 sq ft with waterline cleaning. Best fit: WYBOT C1.
800 sq ft with walls and waterline, no cord. The WYBOT C1 (1,618 sq ft, about 160 minutes) is the lowest priced robot that does all of it. The Beatbot Sora 10 runs about 300 minutes per charge for bigger pools.
Frequently asked questions
What size robotic pool cleaner do I need?
One rated for at least your pool's surface area or length. Makers rate either square feet or pool length; this tool checks whichever the maker publishes against your pool's real floor area (length x width for a rectangle, pi x radius squared for a round pool, pi x half length x half width for an oval).
Cordless or corded pool robot?
Cordless robots drop in with nothing on the deck and no cord to tangle, but each run ends when the battery does. Corded robots run as long as needed and suit large pools, and there is no battery to wear out.
Do I need wall and waterline cleaning?
For an in-ground pool, wall climbing is worth it because algae often starts on the walls. Waterline scrubbing removes the scum ring at the surface. Above-ground pools with soft walls usually only need the floor.
Can I use an in-ground pool robot in an above-ground pool?
Only if the maker rates it for both. Some robots are heavy or built for hard walls, and some above-ground models are too light for an in-ground floor. The tool filters by the maker's pool type.
How do I measure a kidney-shaped or freeform pool?
Use the longest length and the widest width and multiply them. That overstates the true surface, which gives you a safe margin against the maker's rating. For a robot rated by pool length, compare its rating with your longest length.
What happens if my pool is bigger than the robot's rating?
The robot can run out of battery or cycle time before it covers the whole pool, and corded robots may not reach the far end. Pick one rated for at least your area or length. If you are close to the limit, step up one size.
Why are corded pool robots rated by pool length?
The cord limits how far the robot can reach from the power supply on the deck. In our list the Dolphin Nautilus CC is rated for pools up to 33 ft, the Polaris ERA 820 up to 50 ft and the Polaris 9550 Sport up to 60 ft.
How long does a cordless pool robot run on one charge?
Published runtimes in our list run from about 90 minutes (BRINBO S2) to about 300 minutes (Beatbot Sora 10). The WYBOT C1 runs about 160 minutes and the WYBOT C2 about 180. Wall and waterline cleaning use part of each charge, so bigger pools need the longer runtimes.
How often should I run a robotic pool cleaner?
A few times a week keeps most pools clean, and run it again after storms, heavy leaf drop or a pool party. In spring and fall, when debris is heavy, more often helps. Empty the filter basket after every run so suction stays strong.
How do I clean a robotic pool cleaner's filter?
Lift the robot out, open the filter basket or cartridge and rinse it with a hose after every cycle. A clogged filter cuts suction and is a common reason a robot stops climbing walls. Let the robot drain and dry out of direct sun before storing it.
