Home Training Range Planner: Dry Fire, Laser and Airgun
Pick dry fire or airgun practice, enter your room, and see whether it fits, how wide each lane should be, how big to print targets for the distance you want, which pellet trap is rated for your airgun, and a kit whose parts work together. Live fire at home is out of scope: it is a job for a professional range builder.

How this calculator works
- Usable distance. Room length less about 3 ft to stand behind the firing line and 1.5 ft for the target or trap on the far wall.
- Dry fire. Laser kits are made for about 7 to 15 ft. To simulate a longer distance, print the target at your distance divided by the simulated distance.
- 10 m airgun. 10 m (32.8 ft) from firing line to target, firing points at least 1.0 m wide and at least 1,500 lux on the target, per ISSF technical rules.
- Pellet trap. Muzzle energy = pellet grains x fps x fps / 450,240 ft-lb. A trap is only matched when its maker's velocity or energy rating covers your gun, and its stated minimum distance fits your room.
- Kits. Laser cartridges and snap caps are matched to your chamber, and each laser is paired with a target or app that reads it. Rail sensors come with an adapter when your gun has no rail. Steel BBs are only matched to a trap its maker rates for BBs. Kit totals are shown as price bands.
Worked examples
Dry fire in a 14 x 10 ft spare bedroom
- Dry fire, 9mm
- Room 14 x 10 ft, 1 person
- Simulate 15 yards
Practice from 9 ft. Print targets at 20% to simulate 15 yards.
Take 3 ft for your stance and 1.5 ft for the target on the far wall, which leaves 9.5 ft, inside the 7 to 15 ft most laser kits are made for. To make a target 9 ft away look like 15 yards (45 ft), print it at 9 / 45 = 20% of full size, so an 18 x 30 in silhouette becomes 3.6 x 6 in. A 9mm laser cartridge with a phone-scored target is the core kit; snap caps cover reload drills.
A 10 m air rifle lane in a 40 ft basement
- Airgun at 10 meters
- Room 40 x 12 ft, 2 people
- .177 at 900 fps, 8.4 gr
It fits one 10 m lane. A .177 rifle at 900 fps makes about 15 ft-lb, so use a trap rated to 20 ft-lb.
10 m is 32.8 ft from the firing line to the target. Add 3 ft to stand and 1.5 ft for the trap: 37.3 ft, so 40 ft fits. Two firing points at 4 ft each (the ISSF minimum is 1.0 m) need 8 ft of the 12. Energy = 8.4 x 900 x 900 / 450,240 = 15.1 ft-lb, over a 10 ft-lb trap's rating and inside a 20 ft-lb trap's.
Plinking in a 24 ft garage with a 600 fps pellet gun
- Airgun plinking
- Garage 24 x 20 ft, 1 person
- .177 at 600 fps
Shoot from about 19 ft into an 800 fps rated trap.
24 ft less 4.5 ft for stance and trap leaves about 19 ft. 600 fps with an 8.4 gr pellet is 6.7 ft-lb, inside both an 800 fps rated trap and a 10 ft-lb resetting trap. Put the trap in front of a solid wall, never a garage door or a window.
Frequently asked questions
How much room do I need for dry fire practice?
About 12 ft of length works well: roughly 7 to 15 ft between you and a laser target, plus room to stand. A rail-mounted motion sensor works in an even smaller space because it measures how the gun moves, not where a laser lands. Allow about 3 ft of width per person.
How long a room do I need for a 10 meter air rifle range?
About 38 ft. The target is 10 m (32.8 ft) from the firing line, and you need about 3 ft to stand behind the line and 1.5 ft for the trap. Each firing point should be at least 1.0 m wide; 4 ft is comfortable at home.
How do I scale a target to simulate a longer distance?
Multiply the full-size target by your distance divided by the distance you want to simulate. At 10 ft, a target meant to look like 25 yards (75 ft) prints at 10 / 75 = 13% of full size. An 18 x 30 in silhouette becomes about 2.4 x 4 in.
What pellet trap do I need for my air rifle?
One the maker rates above your gun's power. Makers rate traps by velocity (fps) or muzzle energy (ft-lb). Energy = pellet grains x fps x fps / 450,240, so a .177 pellet of 8.4 gr at 900 fps is about 15 ft-lb and a .22 pellet of 14.3 gr at 800 fps is about 20 ft-lb. Some traps also state a minimum shooting distance.
Can I shoot BBs into a pellet trap?
Only one its maker rates for BBs. Steel BBs bounce off bare steel and can come straight back. Pick Steel BBs in step 3 and we only match a BB-rated trap, such as a box lined with foam that stops rebounds.
My pistol has no accessory rail. Can I use a Mantis sensor?
Yes, with an adapter. The X2 and X3 are sold in bundles with a MagRail that replaces your magazine's floor plate, and the X10 comes with a universal adapter. A revolver has neither a rail nor a magazine, so a laser cartridge in its caliber is the simpler trainer.
Does dry fire work with a revolver?
Yes. Strikeman makes a .38 Special laser cartridge, which also chambers in a .357 Magnum revolver. The laser fires only when its chamber is under the hammer, so turn the cylinder to line it up before each press, and use snap caps in the other chambers.
Is dry firing bad for my gun?
Most modern centerfire pistols are fine, but check your manual. Rimfire guns and some older designs can be damaged. Snap caps or a laser cartridge with a rubber pad cushion the firing pin either way.
How do I dry fire safely at home?
Unload the gun and check it twice, then move all live ammunition to another room. Pick a direction where a wall would stop a bullet if you made a mistake, and never point at a person. When the session ends, say out loud that you are done before you reload.
Can I build a live-fire range in my house or basement?
Not as a DIY project. A live-fire range needs bullet containment engineered for the calibers you shoot, ventilation and cleanup that keep lead dust out of the house, a structural review, insurance and local permits or zoning approval. That is work for a professional range builder. Most people train dry fire at home and shoot live at a local range.
How bright should a target be?
Brighter than the firing line. ISSF rules put at least 1,500 lux on 10 m targets. At home, aim a light at the target from the side and keep the area where you stand dimmer, so the sights and target are crisp without glare off the trap.
Do I need hearing protection for airguns?
Not usually for low-powered pellet guns, but magnum spring rifles and unshrouded PCP rifles are loud indoors. Electronic earmuffs protect your hearing and still let you hear people talking; you will want them for range days anyway.
