How this calculator works
- Ceiling. Golfer height + driver length - 9 in, + 1.5 in for a mat or 6 in for a platform. That rule of thumb lands on the 9 ft minimum and 10 ft comfortable figures launch monitor makers publish. Within 3 in under it is borderline; 6 in over is comfortable.
- Depth. 1 ft behind the screen + 8 to 10 ft of ball flight + what the launch monitor needs behind the ball: 6 to 8 ft for the Garmin R10 and 6.5 to 8.5 ft for the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, or 4 to 5 ft of backswing for camera units that sit beside the ball.
- Width. 10 ft minimum and 12 ft comfortable for one golfer with the tee offset; 13 to 15 ft for a centered tee shared by righties and lefties.
- Screen. The largest enclosure whose frame fits the width and stays 2 in under the ceiling. Where the maker lists no frame size we allow 6 in over the screen width.
- Projector. Mount distance = throw ratio x native image width. On a screen narrower than 16:9 the image fills the height, so native width = screen height x 16/9. We prefer a mount at least 3 ft in front of the ball, then one over the hitting area, then behind the golfer.
Worked examples
A two-car garage with a 10 ft ceiling
- 12 ft wide, 20 ft deep, 10 ft ceiling
- Right handed, 6 ft, 45 in driver
- Mat on the floor
Fits everything: a radar unit at its ideal spot, a 10 x 8 ft screen, and a 0.5 throw projector mounted clear of the swing.
Ceiling: 72 + 45 - 9 + 1.5 = 109.5 in, about 9 ft 2 in, so 10.5 in to spare. Depth: a Rapsodo MLM2PRO at its ideal 8.5 ft behind the ball plus 1 ft behind the screen leaves 10.5 ft of ball flight. A 10 x 8 ft enclosure needs about 10 ft 6 in with its frame. The screen is narrower than 16:9, so the projector fills its height: 8 x 16/9 = 14.2 ft native width, x 0.496 = 7.1 ft from the screen, 3.4 ft in front of the ball.
A basement with a 9 ft ceiling and 14 ft of depth
- 11 ft wide, 14 ft deep, 9 ft ceiling
- Right handed, 5 ft 10 in, 45 in driver
- Mat on the floor
Tight but workable with a camera launch monitor beside the ball. Too short for radar.
Ceiling: 70 + 45 - 9 + 1.5 = 107.5 in against 108 in, half an inch to spare: take a slow swing before you commit. A radar unit needs at least 15 ft even for the Garmin R10 (1 + 8 + 6), so it is out. A camera unit beside the ball needs 13 ft: 9 ft of ball flight plus 4 ft of backswing. A 10 x 8 ft enclosure fits the 11 ft width. The projector lands 7.1 ft from the screen, about 2 ft in front of the ball, so mount it flush to the ceiling or in a cage.
A bonus room shared by a righty and a lefty
- 16 ft wide, 18 ft deep, 10 ft 6 in ceiling
- Both, tallest 6 ft 2 in, 45.5 in driver
- Raised platform
A 14 x 8 ft screen on a raised platform with a centered tee, and room for radar or camera units.
Ceiling: 74 + 45.5 - 9 + 6 = 116.5 in, about 9 ft 9 in, so 9.5 in to spare even on the platform. Width: a centered tee needs 13 ft and 15 ft is comfortable; 16 ft clears it. Depth: 18 ft gives a radar unit 7 ft behind the ball and 10 ft of ball flight. A 14 x 8 ft screen is close to 16:9, so a standard projector fills it edge to edge.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?
About 9 ft for most golfers up to 6 ft tall swinging a driver, and 10 ft to swing freely. A quick estimate is your height plus your driver length less 9 inches, plus whatever you stand on. Taller golfers, upright swings and raised platforms need more. Take a slow driver swing in the room before you buy.
How deep does a golf simulator room need to be?
With a radar launch monitor behind you (Garmin R10, Rapsodo MLM2PRO), at least 15 to 16 ft: 1 ft behind the screen, 8 ft of ball flight and 6 to 8.5 ft for the monitor. With a camera unit beside the ball (SkyTrak, Uneekor, Bushnell, Garmin R50), about 13 ft works, and 16 ft is comfortable.
How wide does a golf simulator room need to be?
10 ft for one golfer with the tee offset so you stand near the middle, 12 ft to swing comfortably. If right and left handed players share the bay with a centered tee, plan on 13 to 15 ft.
How far should the ball be from the impact screen?
At least 8 ft, which is what Garmin and Rapsodo list for their radar units, and 10 ft if you have the room. Closer than that, more balls bounce back and radar units have less flight to read.
Where do I mount a golf simulator projector?
On the ceiling, at throw ratio x image width from the screen. A 0.5 throw projector on a 10 x 8 ft screen sits about 7 ft from the screen, in front of you and out of your swing. A 0.69 to 0.83 throw projector sits 10 to 12 ft back, over or behind the hitting area, where it needs a cage or a high mount to stay out of the club's reach and your shadow.
4:3, 16:10 or 16:9 for a golf screen?
Match the screen to the projector if you can. Most projectors are 16:9; on a 4:3 screen they run in 4:3 mode and use about three quarters of their pixels, which still looks fine at 1080p. A wide 14 x 8 ft screen fills a 16:9 image edge to edge but needs a room about 15 ft wide.
Can I use an ultra short throw projector for a golf simulator?
Usually not. A UST projector sits on the floor a foot or two from the screen, right where the ball flies, so it needs a ball-proof enclosure. Short throw projectors (0.5 to 0.8) on the ceiling are the standard choice.
Radar or camera launch monitor for a small room?
Camera. A radar unit has to sit 6 to 8.5 ft behind the ball to track it, which is the hardest space to find indoors. Camera units sit beside the ball, so the room behind you only needs backswing space.
Does a raised platform change the ceiling height I need?
Yes, inch for inch. A platform that lifts you 6 inches takes 6 inches off your ceiling clearance. It levels a sloped garage floor and hides cables, so it is worth it when the ceiling allows.
