Best Home Golf Simulator Setups by Budget and Room Size

By Marcus Reed. Updated Oct 14, 2026. Picks come from published specs and our sizing math. Some links pay us a commission, and each one says so.

A home golf simulator is four parts: a launch monitor that measures the ball, something to hit into (a net or an enclosure with an impact screen), a projector to show the course, and a mat to hit off. The room decides most of it before you look at prices.

Our picks at a glance

From published specs and our sizing rules. Not lab tested.

  • 1

    First launch monitor

    Garmin Approach R10

Radar 6 to 8 ft behind the ball

  • 2

    For short rooms

    SkyTrak ST MAX

Camera + radar beside the ball

  • 3

Enclosure for a 12 ft room

GoSports 10 x 8 ft Golf Simulator Enclosure

    10 x 8 ft screen

  • 4

Projector that mounts in front of you

Optoma GT2000HDR Short Throw Laser Projector

    0.50 throw ratio

Start with three measurements. The ceiling has to clear your driver swing, about 9 ft for most golfers up to 6 ft tall and 10 ft to swing freely. Depth decides the launch monitor: radar units like the Garmin R10 and Rapsodo MLM2PRO sit 6 to 8.5 ft behind the ball, so they need 15 to 16 ft of room, while camera units sit beside the ball and work in about 13 ft. Width decides the screen: 10 to 12 ft for one golfer, 13 to 15 ft if righties and lefties share a centered tee.

The projector comes last, because its spot is set by math: throw ratio x image width = distance from the screen. Our golf simulator room size calculator runs all of it for your room and builds a kit at three budgets.

Budget: a net, a mat and a radar launch monitor

The cheapest real setup skips the projector. Hit into a 10 x 7 ft net and read every shot on a phone or tablet, or cast the launch monitor's app to a TV. You still get ball speed, launch, carry and courses.

A radar unit needs the room behind you: the Garmin R10 sits 6 to 8 ft behind the ball, and the ball needs 8 ft to the net. That is about 15 ft in all. Everything here carries over when you add an enclosure and projector later.

Mid range: a full simulator with an enclosure and projector

An enclosure turns the net into a screen. The GoSports enclosures come with the frame, blackout side netting, foam padding and an impact screen, in 10 x 8, 12 x 9 and 14 x 8 ft. Pick the widest one your room takes with about 6 inches to spare for the frame.

Pair it with a short throw projector. Most projectors are 16:9; on a 10 x 8 or 12 x 9 screen they run in 4:3 mode and fill the screen height, so the native image width is the screen height x 16/9. A 0.5 throw projector then sits about 7 to 8 ft from the screen, in front of you. A 0.69 to 0.83 throw projector sits 10 to 12 ft back, over the hitting area, where it needs a cage or a flush mount.

The Rapsodo MLM2PRO adds two cameras to the radar for measured spin and impact video. It sits 6.5 to 8.5 ft behind the ball. If the room is shorter than about 15 ft 6 in, use a camera unit beside the ball instead.

Premium: a camera launch monitor, a SIG enclosure and a golf laser projector

At the top end, camera units measure the ball beside you with no marked balls and no space behind. The Garmin R50 has its own 10 inch touchscreen and HDMI out, so it runs the simulator without a PC. The Uneekor EYE MINI LITE and the Bushnell Launch Pro are the PC-based alternatives for GSPro and E6.

The Indoor Golf Shop SIG enclosures use the SIGPRO screen rated to 250 mph, with padding on all four sides. The SIG10 frame is 10 ft 10 in wide and 8 ft 4 in tall; the SIG12 is 12 ft 2 in by 9 ft 4 in, which needs a ceiling over about 9 ft 6 in.

BenQ's golf projectors are built for this: the AH500ST has a 0.499 throw and 2D keystone, and the AH700ST adds 4,000 lumens and a 1.2x zoom for rooms where the mount spot is fixed.

A projector that doubles as a home theater

If the room is also for movies, a 4K long throw projector can work, but only in a deep room. The JMGO N1S Ultra has a 1.21 throw ratio, so on a 10 x 8 screen it sits about 17 ft back, behind the golfer, where your shadow can fall on the screen when you stand at the ball. Mount it high, or pick a short throw model for golf and keep the theater separate.

Skip ultra short throw projectors for golf. They sit on the floor a foot or two from the screen, in the ball's path.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home golf simulator cost?

A net, mat and radar launch monitor start under $1,000. A full simulator with an enclosure, short throw projector and a mid-range launch monitor runs about $2,500 to $5,000. Camera launch monitors, premium enclosures and golf laser projectors take it over $5,000.

What ceiling height do I need for a golf simulator?

About 9 ft for most golfers up to 6 ft tall, 10 ft to swing a driver freely. A quick check: your height plus your driver length less 9 inches, plus whatever you stand on.

What size room do I need for a golf simulator with a radar launch monitor?

About 15 to 16 ft deep: 1 ft behind the screen, 8 ft of ball flight, and 6 to 8.5 ft behind the ball for the monitor. Camera units that sit beside the ball need about 13 ft.

Which projector throw ratio is best for a golf simulator?

About 0.5. On a 10 x 8 ft screen it mounts about 7 ft from the screen, in front of you, out of your swing and shadow. A 0.7 to 0.8 throw lands over the hitting area, and above 1.0 the projector ends up behind you.

Can I use a TV instead of a projector?

Yes. Hit into a net and put the launch monitor's app on a TV beside it. You lose the life-size view, but the numbers and courses are the same, and it costs far less.

Do I need a PC for a golf simulator?

Not always. The Garmin R10 and Rapsodo MLM2PRO run on a phone or tablet, and the Garmin R50 has a built-in screen with HDMI out. Uneekor units and most third-party course software like GSPro need a Windows PC with a graphics card.
