How this calculator works
- Volume. Inside length x width x ceiling height, in cubic feet.
- Load margin. Cooling units are rated for insulated rooms (R-13 or better walls, R-19 or better ceiling), a vapor barrier and a sealed door. We multiply the volume by 1.5 for a glass wall or door, 2 for a room not insulated yet, 1.1 for a house at 68 to 75 F around it and 1.4 for a space over 80 F. Vendors suggest 15 to 50% extra for weaker rooms (CellarPro, Vinotemp sizing guides); our margins sit at or above that.
- Cooling unit. The smallest self-contained through-wall unit whose rated cellar size meets the loaded volume. Past the largest one, a ducted or split system sized by an installer.
- Racks. About 9 bottles per square foot of wall for single-deep 4 in cells, up to 7 ft high, on every wall but 3 ft for the door.
- Cost. The unit's draw from the maker's rated amps at 115 V, running 40% of the time in an insulated room, 55% with glass and 75% uninsulated (our assumptions), at your state's average rate.
Worked examples
A 300 bottle basement closet cellar
- 300 bottles
- 8 x 6 ft room, 8 ft ceiling
- Insulated with a vapor barrier, in a cool basement
- US average rate, 17.3 cents/kWh
384 cu ft, a cooling unit rated for 650 cu ft, four 96 bottle racks. About $29 a month to run.
8 x 6 x 8 ft is 384 cu ft. Insulated and surrounded by a cool basement, it needs no margin, so the smallest through-wall unit rated at or above 384 cu ft fits: Breezaire's WKL 3000 (650 cu ft; the 265 cu ft model is too small). The walls, less a 3 ft door, take about 1,575 bottles single deep to 7 ft, so 300 leaves plenty of room to grow. At a 575 W draw running about 40% of the time, about 2,000 kWh a year.
A 600 bottle cellar with a glass wall, inside the house
- 600 bottles
- 10 x 8 ft room, 9 ft ceiling
- Insulated, with a glass wall
- Inside the house, 68 to 75 F
720 cu ft that loads like about 1,190 cu ft. A 1,500 cu ft unit.
10 x 8 x 9 ft is 720 cu ft. Glass adds about 50% to the load and a warm house around it another 10%, so we size for about 1,190 cu ft, which skips the 1,000 cu ft unit for the 1,500. Use double-pane glass out of direct sun, and vent the unit into a room at least as large as the cellar.
40 bottles and no spare room
- 40 bottles
- No room to build
A 46 bottle wine fridge, about $4 a month to run.
Under about 50 bottles a fridge holds wine at cellar temperature for far less than building a room. The smallest listed fridge that holds 40 is a 46 bottle, 24 in built-in dual zone unit.
Frequently asked questions
What size cooling unit do I need for my wine cellar?
Multiply the inside length, width and ceiling height in feet to get cubic feet, then pick a unit rated for at least that many. Makers rate units for insulated rooms with a vapor barrier and a sealed door. Size up for glass walls or doors (we use 1.5x), a warm house around the cellar, or a room that is not insulated, and check the unit's maximum exhaust room temperature.
How many bottles fit in a wine cellar?
Individual bottle racking holds about 9 bottles per square foot of wall, single deep, up to about 7 ft high, which is roughly 60 bottles per foot of wall. An 8 x 6 ft room with a 3 ft door has about 25 ft of wall, or about 1,500 bottles. Double-deep racks and center islands hold more.
What temperature and humidity should a wine cellar be?
About 55 F and 50 to 70% relative humidity, steady day to day. Swings matter more than a degree or two either way. Keep it dark and away from vibration.
Does a wine cellar need a vapor barrier?
Yes. A cellar is colder than the rooms around it, so warm humid air pushes toward it and condenses inside the walls. A 6 mil polyethylene barrier on the warm side of the insulation, taped at every seam, stops that. Cooling unit ratings assume one.
How much insulation does a wine cellar need?
Most makers want at least R-13 in the walls and R-19 in the ceiling, and many recommend R-19 walls and an R-30 ceiling. Use an exterior grade or solid core door with weatherstripping and a door bottom seal, since the door is the biggest leak.
Where does a through-wall cooling unit put its heat?
Into the room on the other side of the wall. That room has to stay below the unit's rated maximum and should be at least as large as the cellar, or the unit pulls its own hot exhaust back in and cannot keep up. Mount it high on the wall, since cold air sinks.
Can I use a regular air conditioner to cool a wine cellar?
Not well. Room air conditioners are built to cool to about 68 to 72 F and dry the air out, while a cellar needs 55 F and 50 to 70% humidity. Below about 60 F a standard AC's coil can freeze. Wine cellar units are designed for that temperature and humidity.
Wine fridge or wine cellar?
Up to about 50 bottles, a wine fridge is far cheaper and needs no construction. Past roughly 150 bottles a closet cellar usually costs less per bottle than a row of fridges, and it adds value to the house.
How much does it cost to run a wine cellar?
It depends on the unit's draw and how often it runs. A well insulated cellar's unit runs roughly 40% of the time; glass or poor insulation push that higher. A 575 W unit at 40% uses about 2,000 kWh a year, about $350 at the US average rate.
