Buy in this order. $100 to $250 gets you light, phone power, a fridge thermometer and 7 gallons of water. Add a weather radio and three days of food for $100 to $250 more. That covers a one-night outage for most homes.

If outages here last a day or more, the next buy is a 1 kWh power station to keep the fridge cold and phones charged with no fuel and no noise. If you need heat from a gas furnace or water from a well pump, you need a dual fuel generator, an interlock kit and a battery CO alarm. Only a generator starts a 240V well pump at a price most people will pay.
Each tier below lists what to buy and why. Skip any tier you already own and go straight to the one that fixes your worst outage.

Tier 1: the $100 basics
Five items, $100 to $250 total, and every home should own them. Light, phone power, safe water and a way to know if the food went bad.
Light comes first. Candles start house fires during outages. A battery lantern for the room and a headlamp for your hands covers it. Keep spare batteries taped to each one.
A charged power bank keeps one phone alive for about two days of careful use. Charge it on the first of every month so it is full when you need it.
Water is the one people forget. Plan on 1 gallon per person per day. A 7 gallon Reliance jug covers two people for three days. A family of four needs two. On a well, fill them the moment a storm warning goes out, because the pump stops when the power does.
The thermometer settles the hardest question after an outage. A closed fridge keeps food safe for about 4 hours. Food that sat above 40 F for more than 2 hours goes in the trash. A min/max thermometer records the peak, so you do not have to guess.
Lepro (LE) 1000LM Battery Powered LED Camping Lantern
1,000 lumens with 4 light modes on disposable batteries. No charging, no flame, no fire risk. under $100 for a light that sits in the closet for years and works when you need it.

Tier 1 add-ons: radio and three days of food
Add these two for $100 to $250 if you get storms, hurricanes or ice. Cell towers run on backup batteries that can die in a long outage, and a weather radio still gets NOAA alerts when they do.
Three days of food you can eat cold or with hot water means nobody opens the fridge. Every open lets cold air out and shortens how long the food lasts.

Tier 2: keep the fridge and phones alive
A 1 kWh power station is the right buy if your outages run 6 to 24 hours and you do not need heat or well water. It is silent, runs indoors, needs no fuel and recharges from the wall or solar.
Here is the math. A typical fridge averages about 52 W over a day. Multiply the station's Wh by 0.85 for inverter losses and divide by 52. The 1,070 Wh Jackery gives about 17 hours, the 1,152 Wh BLUETTI about 18 and the 1,024 Wh EcoFlow about 16. Phones, a router and a few lamps barely dent it.
Every unit here has at least a 2,700 W surge, so the fridge compressor will start. Want a fridge and a chest freezer for two days? Go to 2 kWh, and the fridge guide covers that class.
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2

Tier 3: heat and well water
A gas furnace still needs electricity to run its blower, about 600 W. A well pump is harder. A 1/2 HP pump draws about 3,000 W for the second it starts and a 1 HP pump about 6,000 W, almost always at 240V. No 1 kWh power station does that, so this tier is a generator.
Buy dual fuel. Gasoline goes stale in months and stations close in a blackout. A propane tank stores for years and swaps in seconds.
To reach a furnace or a hardwired pump, the generator has to feed your panel. An interlock kit and an inlet box, installed by an electrician, cost far less than a transfer switch and let you pick any circuit. An extension cord cannot reach a hardwired load.
Buy the CO alarm before you start the generator the first time. Generators kill people every winter. Run it at least 20 feet from the house with the exhaust pointed away from doors and windows, and put a battery CO alarm on each sleeping level, since plug-in alarms die with the power.

Tier 4: long outages, three days and up
After three days, the problem is fuel and noise. An open-frame generator like the DuroMax XP13000EH runs about 8 hours at half load on an 8.3 gal tank at 74 dBA, and you hear it across the street.
An inverter generator throttles down with the load, so it runs longer per gallon and much quieter. Propane stores for years without going stale, so stock tanks before the storm and run the generator a few hours at a time.
The other route is a big battery that the generator recharges. Run the generator two or three hours in the morning, charge the battery, then shut it off and run the house quietly from the battery through the night.

Frequently asked questions
What should be in a power outage kit?
Light (a battery lantern and a headlamp), a charged power bank, 1 gallon of water per person per day for three days, a fridge thermometer, a NOAA weather radio and three days of food that needs no fridge. That costs $100 to $250 in total. Add a power station or generator if your outages last longer than a few hours.
How long does food last in the fridge without power?
About 4 hours in a closed fridge. A full freezer holds about 48 hours if you keep it shut, and a half-full one about 24. Throw out anything that sat above 40 F for more than 2 hours. A min/max thermometer tells you the peak.
How much water should I store for a power outage?
1 gallon per person per day, for at least three days. A family of four needs 12 gallons, which is two 7 gallon jugs. On a well, store more, because the pump stops when the power does.
Can a power station run my fridge during an outage?
Yes. A typical fridge averages about 52 W over a day. A 1 kWh station runs it for about 16 to 18 hours, and a 2 kWh station about 33 hours. Every power station in this guide has the surge to start the compressor.
Can a power station run a well pump?
Not a 1 kWh model. A well pump is usually 240V and needs about 3,000 W to start at 1/2 HP and 6,000 W at 1 HP. The EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 has 120/240V output and a 4,000 W inverter, but most people on a well are better served by a dual fuel generator with a 240V outlet.
Do I need a CO alarm if I run a generator outside?
Yes. Exhaust drifts into windows, vents and garages. Run the generator at least 20 feet from the house and put a battery CO alarm on each sleeping level. Plug-in alarms without a battery backup stop working when the power is out.
How do I connect a generator to my furnace?
Through the panel. An electrician installs an interlock kit and an outdoor inlet box, and you run a 30A cord from the generator's L14-30R outlet to the inlet. Then you switch on the furnace circuit. Never backfeed through a dryer outlet with a double-male cord.
Is a power station or a generator better for outages?
A power station for outages under a day, for apartments and anyone who cannot run a generator safely. A generator for multi-day outages, gas furnaces and well pumps. Many homes end up with both, a small station for quiet nights and a generator for the heavy loads.
Are candles safe to use in a power outage?
They are the riskiest light you can use, because an open flame near curtains, bedding or kids is how many outage house fires start. Use a battery lantern for the room and a headlamp for tasks instead. The 1,000 lumen Lepro lantern runs on disposable batteries, so it needs no charging and has no flame.
How often should I check my power outage kit?
Charge the power banks on the first of every month so they are full when the lights go out, and test the lantern, headlamp and radio at the same time. Keep spare batteries with each light. Ready.gov advises replacing water you bottled yourself every six months, and check the dates on stored food once a year.
