A 20 lb propane tank runs a mid-size dual fuel inverter generator for about 10 to 12 hours at 1,500 W, which covers a fridge, furnace blower, lights and Wi-Fi. At a lighter 800 W load it lasts about 20 hours. A big open-frame generator burns through the same tank in 6 to 7 hours.

So a 3-day outage takes 6 to 7 grill tanks for a typical home, and most people own one. Buy the extra tanks before the storm, while they are in stock, or get one 100 lb cylinder, which holds about as much as five 20 lb tanks.
The numbers here come from each generator's published run time, converted to propane. Propane carries about 1.4 times less energy per gallon than gasoline, and a 20 lb tank holds about 4.6 gallons. Pick your load in the calculator and every generator re-sorts by tanks per day.
Top picks, and why
Flame King 20 lb Propane Tanks, 2 Pack
Two 20 lb tanks with OPD valves and gauges for around $180. With the tank you already own that is about 35 hours at 1,500 W on a mid-size inverter generator, close to a day and a half without a refill run.

Flame King 100 lb Propane Tank
A 100 lb cylinder holds about 23.6 gallons, roughly five grill tanks, for around $270. On a 4,500 W class inverter at 1,500 W that is about 2.5 days of runtime. You need a POL to QCC1 adapter or a 100 lb tank hose.

Estimates scale each model's published run time and tank size to your load. Propane carries about 72% of gasoline's energy per gallon, and a 20 lb tank holds about 4.6 gal. Fuel use follows your average load; whether a unit can start your biggest motor depends on starting watts, so add them above or use the generator sizer.

Hours per 20 lb tank, by generator
At 800 W (fridge, lights, router): Westinghouse iGen8200TFC about 28 hours, Champion 4500 dual fuel inverter about 22, Westinghouse iGen5000DFC about 21, Champion 2500 and Westinghouse iGen2550DFC about 20, EcoFlow Smart Generator 4000 about 17.
At 1,500 W (add a furnace blower): iGen8200TFC about 15 hours, DuroMax XP9500iH about 12, Champion 4500 about 12, iGen5000DFC about 11, Champion 2500 about 11, Westinghouse WGen9500DF about 9.5, EcoFlow Smart Generator 4000 about 9.
Open-frame generators burn more at light loads. The DuroMax XP12000EH and XP13000EH run about 6 hours per tank at any load up to about 2,500 W. They make sense only when you run the whole house.
These are estimates from the published gasoline run time at 25 or 50 percent load, converted to propane. Cold weather lowers how fast a 20 lb tank can vaporize gas, so expect less in a hard freeze.
How many tanks for a 1, 3 or 7 day outage
At 1,500 W on a mid-size inverter generator, plan on about 2 tanks a day. That is 2 tanks for one day, 6 to 7 for three days and about 15 for a week.
At 800 W, plan on about 1.2 tanks a day: 2 for one day, 4 for three days and 9 for a week.
Running the generator only part of the day stretches every tank. Four hours on and four hours off keeps a fridge cold and cuts propane use roughly in half.
A 20 lb exchange costs about $20 to $25, and a refill at a propane dealer is usually cheaper. Enter your local price in the calculator for cost per day.
Tanks to buy
Grill tanks are the simplest option because every dual fuel generator ships with a hose for them. Two or three extras cover most outages. For longer outages a 40 lb or 100 lb cylinder means fewer swaps, at the cost of weight: a full 100 lb tank weighs about 170 lb.
New tanks ship empty. Fill them at a propane dealer before storm season, since exchange cages often sell out before a named storm.
Flame King 20 lb Propane Tank with Gauge
A 20 lb tank with an OPD valve and a built-in gauge for around $95. The gauge shows how much runtime is left, so you can swap tanks before the generator stalls at 3 a.m.

Generators that go furthest on propane
Inverter generators throttle down at light loads, so they get far more hours from a tank than open-frame models. If you will run 800 to 1,500 W most of the time, buy an inverter.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a 20 lb propane tank last on a generator?
About 10 to 12 hours at 1,500 W on a mid-size dual fuel inverter generator, and about 20 hours at 800 W. Large open-frame generators use a tank in about 6 to 7 hours even at light loads.
How many propane tanks do I need for a 3-day power outage?
About 6 to 7 grill tanks at 1,500 W, or about 4 at 800 W, on a mid-size inverter generator. Running the generator in shifts, such as four hours on and four off, cuts that roughly in half.
Does a generator use more propane than gasoline?
Yes, by volume. A gallon of propane holds about 70 percent of the energy of a gallon of gasoline, so a generator burns about 1.4 gallons of propane for every gallon of gas. Propane stores for years without going stale, which gas does not.
Can I run a generator on a 100 lb propane tank?
Yes. A 100 lb tank holds about 23.6 gallons, about five grill tanks, and runs a 4,500 W class inverter about 2.5 days at 1,500 W. Most 100 lb tanks have a POL valve, so you need a POL to QCC1 adapter or a hose made for them.
How long does a 40 lb propane tank last on a generator?
About 24 hours at 1,500 W on a 4,500 W class inverter generator. A 40 lb tank holds about 9.4 gallons, twice a grill tank, and uses the same QCC1 hose. At 800 W expect roughly twice that.
How can I tell how much propane is left in my tank?
Use a gauge, or weigh the tank and subtract the tare weight stamped on the collar as TW. Whatever is left over is the propane, out of 20 lb when full. At 1,500 W on a mid-size inverter one tank lasts about 11 hours, so each pound is worth roughly half an hour.
Is it cheaper to run a generator on propane or gas?
Gas is usually cheaper. A 20 lb tank holds about 4.6 gallons of propane, which equals about 3.3 gallons of gasoline (4.6 / 1.4). At $22 a tank that is about $6.70 per gallon of gas equivalent, roughly twice the cost of gas at $3.20. You pay the extra for fuel that keeps for years.
Why does my generator lose power or surge on propane?
Some drop is normal, since every maker rates output about 10 percent lower on propane. Beyond that, the usual causes are a nearly empty tank, a tank too cold to vaporize propane fast enough, or the flow-limiting safety in the QCC1 hose fitting tripping because the valve was opened quickly. Close the valve, reconnect, open it slowly, and move to a fuller or bigger tank at heavy loads.
Where should I store propane tanks for a generator?
Outdoors, upright, in a ventilated spot away from the generator exhaust and out of direct sun. Never inside the house or an attached garage. The NFPA 58 fire code limits propane cylinders kept inside a home to small 1 lb cylinders.
Do propane tanks or propane go bad?
The propane itself does not go stale, which is why it is the better fuel to store for outages. The tank does have a limit: a 20 lb DOT cylinder must be requalified 12 years after the manufacture date stamped on the collar before it can be refilled. Exchange services swap out-of-date tanks for you.
