What decides the cost of running an led light bulb
The answer to how much it costs to run a light bulb today is almost always an LED answer, and it is a very small number. A standard LED that replaces a 60 W incandescent produces about 800 lumens on 8 to 10 W. At the 9 W default for 5 hours a day, it uses 0.045 kWh, under one cent a day and about $2.84 a year at the national average rate. A 100 W equivalent LED draws about 13 to 16 W and a 40 W equivalent about 5 to 6 W, so you can scale the result from the wattage on the base.
The comparison that matters is against the incandescent bulb it replaced. A 60 W incandescent on the same 5 hour schedule uses 0.3 kWh a day, about $18.94 a year, so each LED swap saves about $16 a year. Multiply that by the 20 to 40 sockets in a typical house and lighting goes from a real line on the bill to a minor one. LEDs also last 15,000 to 25,000 hours against about 1,000 for an incandescent, so you buy far fewer bulbs.
Turning lights off when you leave a room is still worth it with LEDs, just in smaller amounts. There is no start-up surge that makes switching cost more than leaving them on, and frequent switching does not meaningfully shorten an LED's life. A bulb left on all night by mistake costs about a cent.
Smart bulbs add one wrinkle. A Wi-Fi or Zigbee smart bulb stays connected while switched off in the app, typically drawing 0.2 to 0.5 W in standby. Across a dozen smart bulbs that is a few kWh a year, still small, but it means a smart bulb switched off in the app is never fully off. If a lamp is controlled by a wall switch, the standby draw ends when the switch is off.
How to cut it
- Replace any remaining incandescent or halogen bulbs in the fixtures you use most first.
- Match lumens, not watts, when buying. 800 lumens is a 60 W equivalent.
- Use motion sensors in closets, garages and hallways where lights get left on.
- Choose ENERGY STAR certified bulbs for rated lifespan and consistent color.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run an LED light bulb per hour?+
About 0.16 cents an hour. A 9 W LED uses 0.009 kWh an hour, and 0.009 x $0.173 is $0.0016, so one dollar runs it for over 600 hours at the national average rate.
How much does it cost to run an LED bulb per month?+
About 23 cents a month. 9 W for 5 hours a day is 0.045 kWh, or 1.35 kWh over 30 days, and 1.35 x $0.173 is about $0.23.
How much does it cost to run an LED bulb per year?+
About $2.84 a year at 5 hours a day. 0.045 kWh a day for 365 days is 16.4 kWh, and 16.4 x $0.173 is about $2.84.
How much does it cost to leave an LED light on all night?+
About 1.2 cents for an 8 hour night. 0.009 kW x 8 hours = 0.072 kWh, and 0.072 x $0.173 is $0.012.
How much does it cost to leave an LED light on 24 hours a day?+
About 3.7 cents a day, or about $13.64 a year. 9 W x 24 hours is 0.216 kWh a day and 78.8 kWh a year at 17.3 cents per kWh.
How many watts does an LED bulb use?+
About 8 to 10 W for a 60 W equivalent (800 lumens), 5 to 6 W for a 40 W equivalent, and 13 to 16 W for a 100 W equivalent. The real wattage is printed on the base or the box next to the equivalent figure.
Does an LED bulb use a lot of electricity?+
No. A 9 W LED uses about 16 kWh a year at 5 hours a day, about what a 1,500 W space heater uses in 11 hours at full output. Twenty LED bulbs on the same schedule cost about $57 a year.
How much do LED bulbs save compared with incandescent?+
About $16 a year per bulb at 5 hours a day. A 60 W incandescent costs about $18.94 a year and a 9 W LED about $2.84, so each swap saves 51 W, or about 93 kWh a year at the national average rate.
Do smart bulbs use electricity when they are off?+
Yes, usually 0.2 to 0.5 W while switched off in the app, because the radio stays connected. At 0.5 W that is about 4.4 kWh, roughly 76 cents, per bulb per year.
How long will a power station run an LED bulb?+
About 94 hours from a 1,000 Wh station for one 9 W bulb, after about 15 percent inverter loss (850 / 9 = 94). Four LED lamps at 36 W run about 24 hours.
