What decides the cost of running an air fryer

An air fryer is a small convection oven: a 1,400 to 1,800 W heating element with a fan behind it, inside a basket the size of a bread loaf. The element runs at full power until the basket reaches temperature, which only takes two or three minutes because the space is small, and then cycles to hold it. Over a 20 minute cook the element is on roughly 60 to 75 percent of the time, and the calculator splits the difference at 70 percent. A 1,500 W unit cooking for 25 minutes a day uses about 0.4 kWh, around 13 kWh a month.

The small space is why it beats the oven. A full-size electric oven draws 2,000 to 3,000 W, takes 10 to 15 minutes to preheat a cavity 10 times the volume, and then has to hold that cavity at temperature. Cooking the same tray of frozen food in the oven typically uses 1 to 1.5 kWh against 0.3 to 0.5 in the air fryer. For a single batch of fries or a couple of chicken thighs, the air fryer is a third of the energy and finishes sooner. The saving shrinks as the batch grows. Split a full oven load for six people into two or three air fryer batches and it ends up close to even.

Size and style make a small difference. Large dual-basket or oven-style air fryers draw 1,700 to 1,800 W and have more space to heat, so they use more per cook, but they also replace the oven on more meals. Toaster-oven style units with an air fry mode fall somewhere between. Preheating is optional on most models, and skipping it on foods that cook for more than 10 minutes saves a few percent.

Next to a microwave it uses more energy per minute and runs longer, so it is the wrong tool for reheating soup or rice. Where it earns its spot is food that needs to be crisp. Standby draw is negligible on nearly all models, and the ones with a clock pull a watt or two.

How to cut it

  • Use it instead of the oven for anything that fits in one batch.
  • Skip preheat on longer cooks. The basket gets to temperature in the first few minutes anyway.
  • Cook back-to-back batches while the basket is hot.
  • Use the microwave for reheating soft food and the air fryer for anything that should be crisp.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to run an air fryer for 30 minutes?+

Roughly 0.5 kWh for a 1,500 W unit with normal cycling, about 9 cents at the national average rate and 15 to 20 cents in the highest-rate states.

Is an air fryer cheaper to run than an oven?+

For one or two servings, yes, by two thirds or more. The oven has to preheat and hold a much larger space. For a large meal that needs several air fryer batches, the two end up close.

Does a bigger air fryer cost more to run?+

A little. An 8 quart or dual-basket unit at 1,700 to 1,800 W uses 15 to 25 percent more per cook than a 4 quart at 1,400 W, but it also cooks more at once, so the cost per serving is similar.

How many watts does an air fryer use?+

Most air fryers draw 1,400 to 1,800 W, and a typical basket model is about 1,500 W. Large dual-basket and oven-style units sit at the top of that range. The element cycles once the basket is hot, so average draw over a cook is about 70 percent of the rating.

How much does it cost to run an air fryer per month?+

About $2.20 a month at 25 minutes a day. A 1,500 W unit cycling at 70 percent for 0.4 hours uses 1.5 kW x 0.4 x 0.7 = 0.42 kWh a day, about 12.6 kWh a month, and 12.6 kWh x $0.173 is $2.18 at the national average rate.

Does an air fryer use a lot of electricity?+

It draws a lot of power while on, but total use is small because cooks are short. At 25 minutes a day it uses about 153 kWh a year, around $26.50 at 17.3 cents. That is a third or less of what the same meals would use in a full-size electric oven.

Can a power station or generator run an air fryer?+

Yes, if it can supply at least 1,500 W continuous, and 1,800 W or more gives margin for larger models. A 20 minute cook uses about 0.35 kWh (1.5 kW x 0.33 hours x 0.7), so a 1,000 Wh power station can manage about two cooks after inverter losses. Most small 1,000 W stations cannot start one.

Is an air fryer cheaper than a microwave?+

No, for reheating the microwave is cheaper. Three minutes in a 1,200 W microwave is 0.06 kWh, about 1 cent, while 8 minutes in a 1,500 W air fryer at 70 percent duty is 0.14 kWh, about 2.4 cents. The air fryer earns its place on food that needs to be crisp.

Does an air fryer use electricity when it is off?+

Almost none. Most models have no standby draw, and the ones with a clock pull a watt or two. At 2 W that is about 17.5 kWh a year (2 W x 8,760 hours), around $3 at the national average rate.

How can I lower the cost of running an air fryer?+

Use it in place of the oven for anything that fits in one batch, and skip preheat on cooks longer than 10 minutes. Cook batches back to back while the basket is still hot, and use the microwave for reheating soft food like soup or rice.
