What decides the cost of running a box fan
A 20 inch box fan is a simple AC induction motor and a plastic blade in a square frame. On high a typical model draws about 55 to 100 W, and on low 35 to 60 W. The Lasko Cool Colors model we list, for example, is rated 56 to 83 W. High-velocity models like the Vornado Model 80 move about 3,000 cubic feet per minute and draw up to 120 W. The default here is 75 W for 8 hours, 0.6 kWh, about 10 cents a day at the national average rate.
A box fan moves more air per dollar than almost anything, but it moves air, it does not cool it. Like a ceiling fan it makes you feel cooler by speeding up evaporation from your skin. Pointed at you it can let you set the air conditioner several degrees higher. Running in an empty room it only adds its own motor heat.
Where a box fan really earns its keep is in a window. On summer nights when the outdoor air drops below the indoor temperature, a fan in one window blowing out, with another window open across the house, pulls cool air through every room. That is a whole house fan on a small scale, and it can replace hours of air conditioning in dry climates and on cool nights. Box fans rated window safe have sealed motors for this.
The motor is where the newer designs save. DC motor fans and air circulators draw 2 to 40 W across their speed range and often move comparable air at lower speeds. A box fan on low is already cheap, but a DC fan at 20 W costs about a quarter of a 75 W box fan on high.
Over a year at 8 hours a day the default uses about 219 kWh, roughly $38. Most people only run a box fan for the summer months, so the real number is usually $10 to $15. A plug-in meter gives the exact draw for each speed setting.
How to cut it
- Point it at people, not at an empty room, and turn it off on the way out.
- On cool nights, put it in a window blowing out and open a window across the house.
- Use the low setting when it is enough. It draws roughly 30 to 40 percent less.
- Clean dust off the blades and grille. A dirty blade moves less air for the same watts.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run a box fan per hour?+
About 1.3 cents an hour on high. A 75 W fan uses 0.075 kWh an hour, and 0.075 x $0.173 is $0.013. On low at about 50 W it is under 1 cent.
How much does it cost to run a box fan all night?+
About 10 cents for 8 hours on high: 0.075 kW x 8 = 0.6 kWh, and 0.6 x $0.173 is $0.104. On low it is about 7 cents.
How much does it cost to run a box fan 24 hours a day?+
About 31 cents a day on high: 0.075 kW x 24 = 1.8 kWh, and 1.8 x $0.173 is $0.31. That is about $9.34 over a 30 day month.
How much does it cost to run a box fan per month?+
About $3.11 a month on the default of 8 hours a day: 0.6 kWh x 30 = 18 kWh, and 18 x $0.173 is $3.11. Over a full year that is about 219 kWh, roughly $38.
How many watts does a box fan use?+
About 55 to 100 W on high and 35 to 60 W on low for a standard 20 inch box fan. High-velocity models draw up to about 120 W.
Does a box fan use a lot of electricity?+
No. At 75 W it uses about the same as one old incandescent bulb. A box fan run 8 hours a day all summer uses about 72 kWh over 4 months, roughly $12 at the national average rate.
Is a box fan cheaper than air conditioning?+
Yes, by about 6 times against a small window unit on this site's defaults: 0.6 kWh a day, about 10 cents, for the fan against 3.6 kWh, about 62 cents, for an 8,000 BTU window AC. But a fan does not lower the air temperature.
Is a box fan or a tower fan cheaper to run?+
Usually a tower fan, which draws about 30 to 40 W against 55 to 100 W for a box fan, but it also moves much less air. A box fan on low and a tower fan on high cost about the same.
How long will a power station run a box fan?+
About 11 to 12 hours on high on a 1 kWh power station. At 75 W, 1,000 Wh lasts about 13 hours before inverter losses, and longer on low.
How can I lower the cost of running a box fan?+
Run it on low when that is enough, turn it off in empty rooms, and use it in a window on cool nights instead of the AC. Switching from high to low for 8 hours saves about 0.2 kWh, around 3.5 cents a night.
