The best whole house water softener for most homes is the US Water Systems Matrixx 48K at around $1,635. For less money, the Fleck 5600SXT 48K holds the same 1.5 cubic feet of resin for $500 to $1,000. Big houses with 5 or more bathrooms want the Matrixx 64K at 20 GPM. The best salt-free pick is the SpringWell FutureSoft FS1, and the budget buy is the Whirlpool WHES40E at $500 to $1,000.

Grain size matters more than brand. A softener that is too small regenerates every few days and burns salt. One that is too big lets the resin sit for weeks. Put your hardness, iron and household size into our water softener sizer and it returns the grain size and the units that fit in under a minute.
Every spec below comes from the maker's or seller's published listing. We match units to sizing math and flow ratings, and we have not installed them.

What size softener you need, in one formula
Take your hardness in grains per gallon and add 4 for every ppm of iron and 2 for every ppm of manganese. That is compensated hardness. Multiply it by the number of people and by 75 gallons per person per day to get daily grains. Multiply by 7 for a weekly regeneration, then divide by 0.7 so the softener runs at an efficient salt setting. Round up to the next standard size and that is the grain rating to buy.
Four people at 15 gpg with no iron use 4,500 grains a day and 31,500 a week, which divides out to 45,000, so a 48K. Two people at 12 gpg come to 18,000 nominal, so even the smallest unit here is plenty. Five people at 20 gpg need 75,000, which is past every unit in our list. If your water report lists hardness in mg/L or ppm, divide by 17.1 to get gpg. The water softener sizer runs all of this, adds a flow check by bathroom count, and lists the units that pass.
The picks by size and flow
Flow decides whether the shower drops when the washer fills. Plan on 7 GPM for 1 bathroom, 9 for 2, 12 for 3, 15 for 4 to 5 and 20 for 6 or more. The Whirlpools stop at 7.6 and 8.5 GPM. The Aquasana SimplySoft, SpringWell, Fleck and Aquasure two-tanks sit between 11 and 13 GPM, and the Matrixx 48K and 64K reach 15 and 20.
Within a size, you are choosing between dealer support and price. SpringWell and US Water Systems sell direct with long warranties. The Fleck and Aquasure units are standard valves on standard tanks at roughly half the price, and any water treatment shop can service a Fleck.

Salt vs salt-free, what each one actually does
A salt-based softener removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange. The water tests soft, soap lathers, glasses dry without spots and the water heater stays clean. It needs salt, a drain and an outlet.
A salt-free conditioner, also called TAC, does not remove hardness. It changes how the minerals crystallize so less of it sticks to pipes and heating elements. The water still tests hard, still spots glass and still feels the same in the shower. It needs no salt, drain or power. Iron fouls the media, so we only suggest salt-free on city water under 25 gpg with iron under 0.3 ppm.
If you want soft water, buy salt-based. If you only want less scale and refuse to haul salt, the SpringWell FS1 or Aquasana's Rhino combo is the right tool. Our sizer tells you when your water qualifies.

Upfront price vs 10-year cost
Salt is the running cost, and it depends on grains removed, not on the brand. At the efficient 8 lb per cubic foot setting, each pound of salt removes about 2,800 grains. Four people at 15 gpg remove about 1.64 million grains a year, which takes roughly 590 lb of salt. That is about 15 bags of 40 lb, or $75 to $120 a year at $5 to $8 a bag. The valve draws about 5 W, around $7 a year in power.
Over 10 years at that usage, the Fleck 48K comes to about $1,600 to $2,100 all in, the Matrixx 48K about $2,450 to $2,900, and the Whirlpool WHES40E about $1,400 to $1,850 if it covers your flow. The SpringWell FS1 stays near its purchase price ($1,000 to $2,000) because it uses no salt, though it never softens the water.
Halve the hardness and you halve the salt. Double the household and you double it. The sizer shows pounds of salt a month for your own household, which makes the comparison quick.
DIY install vs a plumber
You can install a two-tank softener yourself if you can cut copper or work with PEX. You need a bypass valve (the Fleck and Matrixx include one), a drain within about 20 feet with an air gap on the regeneration line, and a 120 V outlet. Plan on two to three hours plus valve programming.
A plumber charges about $300 to $600 for a standard install. Pay it if the main line is buried in a finished wall, if the drain is far away, or if local code requires a licensed plumber for work on the main. Either way, put the softener after any well pressure tank or iron filter and before the water heater.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best whole house water softener in 2026?
The US Water Systems Matrixx 48K is our best overall pick for a typical family. It has 1.5 cubic feet of resin, a smart metered valve and 15 GPM of flow. The Fleck 5600SXT 48K is the best value, with the same 1.5 cubic feet of resin for less, and the Matrixx 64K is the pick for homes with 5 or more bathrooms.
What size water softener do I need?
Multiply people by 75 gallons by your compensated hardness in gpg, times 7 days, then divide by 0.7. Compensated hardness is hardness plus 4 per ppm of iron and 2 per ppm of manganese. Four people at 15 gpg need about 45,000 grains, so a 48K. Our water softener sizer does the math for you.
Is salt or salt-free better?
Salt-based is better if you want soft water. Salt-free conditioners reduce scale but leave the hardness in, so spotting and soap use stay the same. Salt-free only makes sense on city water under 25 gpg with iron under 0.3 ppm when scale is the only issue.
How much salt does a water softener use per year?
About 590 lb a year for four people at 15 gpg, or roughly 15 bags of 40 lb. That works out to $75 to $120 a year at $5 to $8 a bag. Salt scales with hardness and people, so double either one and you double the salt.
Is a cabinet softener as good as a two-tank?
A cabinet softener works fine in a 1 to 2 bathroom home. The Whirlpool cabinets top out at 7.6 and 8.5 GPM, while the two-tank picks here run 10 to 20 GPM. Two-tank units also use standard valves and tanks, so repairs are cheaper over a 15-year life.
Can a water softener be too big?
Yes. An oversized metered softener can go two to three weeks between regenerations, and resin that sits that long can channel and grow bacteria. Size it to regenerate about every 6 to 10 days, or set the calendar override on the valve to force a cycle every 14 days at most.
Do I need a softener if I have iron in my well?
Under 1 ppm, a softener can handle the iron if you size it on compensated hardness. Above 1 ppm, put an iron filter ahead of it, and above 3 ppm the filter is required. Our well water and iron guide covers which filter to pair with which softener.
Can I install a water softener myself?
Yes, if you can cut and join copper or PEX. You need a bypass, a drain with an air gap within about 20 feet, and a 120 V outlet, and it takes two to three hours. A plumber charges about $300 to $600 if you would rather not.
What flow rate water softener do I need?
Plan on 7 GPM for 1 bathroom, 9 for 2, 12 for 3, 15 for 4 to 5 and 20 for 6 or more. The Whirlpool cabinets stop at 7.6 and 8.5 GPM, the Fleck, SpringWell, Aquasure and Aquasana two-tanks sit between 11 and 13 GPM, and the Matrixx 48K and 64K reach 15 and 20 GPM. Go past the service flow and pressure drops while hard water slips through.
Is a water softener worth it over 10 years?
If you want soft water, the 10-year cost is mostly the purchase plus salt. For four people at 15 gpg, salt runs $75 to $120 a year and the 5 W valve about $7 a year, so the Fleck 48K comes to about $1,600 to $2,100 over 10 years, the Matrixx 48K about $2,450 to $2,900 and the Whirlpool WHES40E about $1,400 to $1,850. A salt-free conditioner costs almost nothing to run, but it never softens the water.
