For most kitchens, buy the Waterdrop G2. It is a tankless under-sink RO at about $250, makes 400 gallons a day, and its filters cost about $75 a year. At 2 gallons of drinking and cooking water a day, that is about 10 cents a gallon in filters.

Waterdrop G3P600 Tankless Reverse Osmosis System (600 GPD)
Check price at WaterdropPaid link
If you rent or cannot drill a faucet hole, buy the M6SL countertop unit: fill it, plug it in, about 10 cents a gallon in filters. If you want the strongest certifications, buy the G3P600, the only under-sink unit here under $500 certified to NSF/ANSI 58, the RO standard.
The purchase price is the small part. Over five years the filters cost more than the system for most of these units, so we ranked them by what you pay per gallon, not by the sticker.

What a gallon of RO water really costs
Add up every filter's price divided by its life in years, then divide by the gallons you drink. A family drinking and cooking with 2 gallons a day uses 730 gallons a year.
Waterdrop G2: $29.99 carbon filter every 12 months plus $89.99 RO filter every 24 months is about $75 a year, 10 cents a gallon. M6SL: one $69.99 filter every 12 months, about 10 cents a gallon. WD-T3-T: about $92 a year, 13 cents. G3P600: about $145 a year, 20 cents. G3P800: about $160 a year, 22 cents.
Count the purchase too. Over five years (3,650 gallons) the G2 works out to about 17 cents a gallon all in, the M6SL about 17 cents, the T3-T about 18 cents, the G3P600 about 32 cents and the G3P800 about 45 cents. If you buy gallon jugs today, compare what you pay per jug to those numbers.

Tankless or tank
Tankless units (G2, G3P600, G3P800) filter on demand. They take less cabinet space, do not hold stale water and fill a glass fast, but they need an outlet under the sink because a pump pushes water through the membrane.
A tank unit (WD-T3-T) stores filtered water, so it can deliver a burst even with a slow membrane, and costs less. The tank takes cabinet space.
Flow ratings matter less than they look. 400 GPD is about a quarter gallon a minute, enough to fill a pot without waiting. Go to 600 or 800 GPD only if several people pull water at once or you want to feed a fridge.
Waterdrop G3P600 Tankless Reverse Osmosis System (600 GPD)

Waste water: 2:1 vs 3:1
Every RO sends some water to the drain to flush the membrane. At 2:1 you send 1 gallon to the drain for every 2 you drink, about 365 gallons a year at 2 gallons a day. At 3:1 it drops to about 243 gallons. Either is about what a washing machine uses in 15 to 20 loads, spread over a whole year.
On a well, waste water is pump run time, not a bill.
No install: countertop RO for renters
The M6SL sits on the counter. You fill a 135 oz feed tank from the tap, it filters into a 40 oz glass pitcher, and the waste goes to a separate tank you empty. No drilling, no drain saddle, and it moves with you.
It makes 75 GPD, slower than the under-sink units, which only matters if you fill large pots. It is certified to NSF/ANSI 58 and 372, and the single $69.99 filter lasts 12 months or 1,100 gallons.

Well water: add a whole house prefilter
Sediment shortens an RO's carbon and membrane life. On a well or older city pipes, a whole house 5 micron filter catches sand and rust before it reaches the RO and every other fixture, so the RO filters last their rated life.
RO is not a fix for high iron, hardness or bacteria. Test first. Iron and hardness need a softener sized to compensated hardness, and bacteria need UV. Our well water filter guide and water softener sizer cover those.
Waterdrop WHF21-PG Whole House Filter (5 micron, 15 GPM)
15 GPM, 5 micron, reduces chlorine and sediment for well or city water. $35.99 cartridge about every 6 months. Around $166.

Frequently asked questions
How much does reverse osmosis water cost per gallon?
About 10 to 22 cents a gallon in filters for the Waterdrop systems here, at 2 gallons a day. The G2 and M6SL are about 10 cents, the G3P600 about 20 cents. Including the purchase price over five years, about 17 to 45 cents a gallon.
Is a tankless reverse osmosis system better?
Tankless saves cabinet space, fills a glass faster and does not store water, but it needs an outlet under the sink. A tank system costs less up front and still works if flow is slow. For most kitchens tankless is worth it.
How much water does a reverse osmosis system waste?
At a 2:1 ratio, 1 gallon goes to the drain for every 2 you drink, about 365 gallons a year at 2 gallons a day. At 3:1, about 243 gallons.
Can renters use a reverse osmosis system?
Yes. A countertop RO like the Waterdrop M6SL needs no plumbing. You fill it from the tap, plug it in and empty a waste tank.
Does reverse osmosis work on well water?
Yes for drinking water, after testing. Add a sediment prefilter so the RO filters last. RO does not replace a softener for hardness and iron or a UV system for bacteria.
How long do reverse osmosis filters last?
It depends on the stage. On the Waterdrop G2 the carbon filter lasts about 12 months and the RO membrane filter about 24 months. The M6SL countertop filter lasts 12 months or 1,100 gallons, whichever comes first. Sediment-heavy water shortens every stage, which is why a whole house prefilter like the WHF21-PG, with a cartridge about every 6 months, helps on a well.
What does NSF/ANSI 58 certification mean on an RO system?
NSF/ANSI 58 is the standard written specifically for reverse osmosis drinking water systems, covering TDS reduction and the system's structural integrity. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic claims like chlorine taste and odor, NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-effect contaminant claims, and NSF/ANSI 372 means the wetted parts meet lead-free material limits. Here the G3P600 is certified to 42, 58 and 372, the G3P800 adds 53, and the M6SL is certified to 58 and 372.
What does GPD mean on a reverse osmosis system?
GPD is gallons per day, the most the system can produce in 24 hours of continuous filtering. Divide by 1,440 minutes to get flow: 400 GPD is about 0.28 gallons a minute, 600 GPD about 0.42 and 800 GPD about 0.56. A household drinking and cooking with 2 gallons a day uses a small fraction of any of these ratings, so the higher numbers buy speed, not capacity.
Does reverse osmosis remove minerals from water?
Yes. The membrane removes most dissolved solids, including the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, which is why RO water can taste flat. Systems with a remineralization stage, like the Waterdrop WD-T3-T, add some minerals back after the membrane. If taste is the concern, that stage is the fix.
Can I install an under-sink reverse osmosis system myself?
Most people can with basic tools. An under-sink RO needs a tee on the cold supply line, a drain saddle on the sink drain and a hole for the dedicated faucet, and a tankless unit like the G2 also needs an outlet under the sink for its pump. If you cannot drill the counter or sink, the M6SL countertop unit needs no install at all.
