Pick a dehumidifier by how wet the space is first and by square feet second. A 35 pint unit handles a damp bedroom, office or bathroom. A 50 pint unit is the standard size for a basement or any room that smells musty or fogs the windows.

Read the pint rating carefully. Since 2019 the DOE test runs at 65 F instead of 80 F, so today's 35 pint unit removes about what a 50 pint unit did under the old test. Some listings still quote the old condition, and crawl space units quote AHAM and saturation pints, so compare like with like.
For a cold crawl space or a basement that stays below room temperature, buy a unit built for it, with auto defrost and a drain hose, such as the AlorAir Sentinel HD55S. A typical 500 W unit running 12 hours a day at 60 percent duty uses 3.6 kWh, about $0.62 a day at the 17.3 cent US average.

Bedrooms, bathrooms and offices: 35 pint class
A 35 pint unit is enough for a single damp room at living temperature. The makers rate these for 3,000 to 3,500 sq ft, but that assumes moderately damp air; in practice the 35 pint class is the right size for one room or a small apartment.
Bucket size decides how often you empty it. At full output a 35 pint unit fills an 8.5 pint bucket about 4 times a day, while a 4.2 gallon (33.6 pint) bucket holds nearly a full day. If you can run a hose to a drain, bucket size stops mattering.

Basements and large rooms: 50 pint class
Most basements need a 50 pint unit. Basements sit cooler and damper than the rooms above, which is exactly the condition the 2019 DOE 65 F test was written for.
Decide on drainage before you buy. A gravity hose needs a floor drain below the unit. With no floor drain, buy a model with a built-in pump so it can push water up to a sink or out a window.
The hOmeLabs unit is rated at 80 F and 60 percent humidity, the older test condition, so its 50 pints are not the same as the other 50 pint ratings here. Treat it as roughly a 35 pint unit on the 2019 test.

Crawl spaces and cold basements
Crawl space units are compact, drain by hose and defrost themselves when the coil ices up in cool air. Their ratings come as AHAM pints (80 F, 60 percent) and saturation pints, which run about twice as high, so compare AHAM to AHAM.
Their coverage numbers are much smaller than portable claims, 1,000 to 1,300 sq ft, because they are rated for the damp, cool air of a crawl space rather than a living room.

Whole house: ducted
A ducted whole-house dehumidifier dries every room from one unit, with no bucket and no unit sitting in a living space. It costs several times a portable and usually goes in with an HVAC contractor, so it makes sense when a whole small home, condo or finished lower level stays humid.

Frequently asked questions
What size dehumidifier do I need for my room?
For a damp bedroom, office or bathroom, a 35 pint dehumidifier (2019 DOE rating) is enough. For a basement or any room with a musty smell or condensation, buy 50 pints. Makers rate 35 pint units for about 3,000 to 3,500 sq ft and 50 pint units for 4,500 to 5,000 sq ft, but those numbers assume moderately damp air, so size up when in doubt.
What is the difference between the old and new dehumidifier pint ratings?
In 2019 the DOE moved the test from 80 F and 60 percent humidity to 65 F and 60 percent, which lowers the rated pints for the same machine. A unit sold as 50 pints under the old test is rated about 35 pints under the new one, and an old 70 pint unit is about 50 pints. Midea's 35 pint Cube, for example, is listed as similar to a 50 pint 2012 DOE unit.
How much does it cost to run a dehumidifier?
About $0.62 a day, or roughly $19 a month, for a typical 50 pint unit. That assumes a 500 W draw, 12 hours a day and the compressor on 60 percent of the time, which is 3.6 kWh a day at the 17.3 cent per kWh US average. In a state at 30 cents per kWh the same use costs about $1.08 a day.
What humidity should I set my dehumidifier to?
Set it between 30 and 50 percent, the range the EPA recommends for indoor air, and 50 percent is the usual setting for a basement. The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent to limit mold growth. Setting it lower than about 40 percent mostly adds run time and cost.
Do I need a dehumidifier with a pump?
Only if there is no floor drain lower than the dehumidifier. A gravity drain hose works only downhill, while a built-in pump pushes water up to a sink or out a basement window. Without either, you empty the bucket by hand, which for a 35 pint unit with an 8.5 pint bucket is about 4 times a day at full output.
Can I use a regular dehumidifier in a crawl space?
It is better to use a unit built for crawl spaces. Crawl space units like the AlorAir Sentinel HD55S have auto defrost and low-temperature operation for cool, damp air and drain continuously by hose. Most portables are designed for living spaces, have buckets that would need emptying and lose capacity as the air gets colder.
Is a 50 pint dehumidifier too big for a small room?
No, a larger unit in a small room just reaches the set humidity faster and then cycles off. The humidistat stops the compressor at your setting, so you pay for the water removed rather than for the rating. The main trade-offs are a larger footprint and a slightly higher purchase price.
What do AHAM and saturation pints mean on crawl space dehumidifiers?
AHAM pints are measured at 80 F and 60 percent humidity, and saturation pints at 80 F and 100 percent humidity. Saturation numbers run about twice the AHAM figure, so the AlorAir Sentinel HD55S is 55 pints AHAM and 120 pints at saturation. Compare crawl space units on AHAM pints.
Does a dehumidifier make a room warmer?
Yes, slightly. All the electricity it uses ends up as heat in the room, about 1,700 BTU per hour for a 500 W unit, plus the heat released as water vapor condenses on the coil. That is useful in a cool basement but works against an air conditioner in summer living space.
Is a whole-house dehumidifier worth it over a portable?
It is worth it when a whole home or a large finished lower level stays humid and you want no buckets or units in the living space. A ducted unit like the Santa Fe Ultra70 removes up to 70 pints a day and filters to MERV-13, but it costs several times a portable and usually needs an HVAC contractor to install. For one or two damp rooms, a portable is the better buy.
