Best Crawl Space Dehumidifier: Sizing, Pumps and Encapsulation

By Marcus Reed. Updated Oct 28, 2026. Picks come from published specs and our sizing math. Some links pay us a commission, and each one says so.

For most sealed crawl spaces up to 1,300 sq ft, buy the AlorAir Sentinel HD55S. It removes 55 pints a day at the AHAM test condition (120 at saturation), is Energy Star certified, has a metal housing and auto defrost, and carries a 6-year limited warranty. If there is no drain lower than the crawl space, buy a unit with a built-in pump instead, such as the Argendon Sandidry 55C at the same 55 pint AHAM rating.

Crawl space units are a different machine from the portable dehumidifier in a bedroom. They are low and compact, drain continuously by hose, keep working in cool air thanks to auto defrost, and are rated in AHAM pints and saturation pints instead of the DOE pints on a portable's box. Compare AHAM to AHAM: the saturation figure is roughly double and is measured in air that is already 100 percent humid.

A dehumidifier only works in a crawl space that is closed off from outdoor air with a vapor barrier on the ground. In a vented crawl space it tries to dry the whole neighborhood. Our dehumidifier sizer picks a unit for your square footage and drain setup, and the sections below cover sizing, drainage, encapsulation and running cost.

Size it by square feet and AHAM pints

Use the maker's square foot rating and the AHAM pint figure, not the saturation number. The crawl space units here fall into three size classes: 35 pints AHAM for up to about 1,000 sq ft, 55 pints for 1,300 to 1,500 sq ft, and 60 pints for up to 1,800 sq ft. Past about 2,000 sq ft, buy the Santa Fe Compact70 or two smaller units placed at opposite ends.

The International Residential Code (2018 and later) allows an unvented crawl space to be dried by a dehumidifier sized at 70 pints a day for every 1,000 sq ft of floor. The code does not name a test condition, so ask your local inspector which rating they accept if the crawl space is part of a permitted job.

Size up one class if the crawl space has a dirt floor that is not fully covered yet, standing water after rain, or a musty smell already. A larger unit just reaches the set humidity sooner and cycles off.

AHAM pints vs saturation pints

AHAM pints are measured at 80 F and 60 percent relative humidity. Saturation pints are measured in hot, nearly saturated air (Argendon lists 90 F and 90 percent), where any dehumidifier pulls far more water, so the saturation figure runs two to two and a half times the AHAM figure on every unit here: 35 and 70, 55 and 120, 60 and 145.

Portable dehumidifiers use a third rating, the DOE test at 65 F and 60 percent. The Santa Fe Compact70 is listed by Energy Star at 43.7 pints on that cooler test, which is why its number looks smaller than the 55 and 60 pint AHAM units even though it is rated for more square feet. Never compare a saturation number to an AHAM or DOE number.

Gravity drain or a condensate pump

A crawl space unit has no bucket, so it must drain. If there is a floor drain, sump pit or an exterior wall where a hose can run downhill, a gravity unit is simpler and has one less part to fail. If water has to go up, over a footing or out a rim joist, buy a unit with a built-in pump or add a separate condensate pump.

Raise the unit on risers so the hose falls continuously and does not trap water under the unit. The built-in pumps on the Argendon and AlorAir pump models lift 19.6 ft per their makers, enough to reach a sink or a laundry standpipe from most crawl spaces.

Seal the crawl space first: vapor barrier and vents

Bare soil gives off water vapor every day, and open vents bring in humid summer air. A dehumidifier in that space runs constantly and never reaches its set point. Encapsulation means covering the ground (and ideally the walls) with a sealed vapor barrier, taping the seams, and closing the foundation vents, so the dehumidifier only has to handle what is left.

Lay the barrier with the seams overlapped and taped, run it up the walls and fasten it, and seal around piers. A 20 mil woven barrier resists tearing when you crawl across it later to service the unit. Fix any outside drainage problem, such as gutters dumping at the foundation, before you seal anything.

Low temperatures, ducting and large crawl spaces

Crawl spaces run cool, and a cold coil frosts over. Every unit in this guide has auto defrost, which pauses the compressor and keeps the fan running until the ice melts. The Galaxy 60P is rated to run down to 37.4 F and the Compact70 to 49 F before it defrosts; standard portable dehumidifiers are built for living-space temperatures and lose capacity as the air cools.

Ducting lets one unit pull air from a far corner or push dry air down a long, chopped-up crawl space. Santa Fe sells ducting, hang and pump kits for the Compact70, which is also short enough to hang between floor joists. The compact 35 to 60 pint units are designed to sit in the open space and move air on their own.

What a crawl space dehumidifier costs to run

Efficiency decides the bill more than wattage. At 2.4 liters per kWh, the rated efficiency of the Galaxy 60P, removing 20 pints (9.5 liters) a day takes about 3.9 kWh. At the 17.3 cent US average that is about $0.68 a day, or roughly $20 a month, which works out to 3.4 cents per pint of water removed.

Wattage tells you the worst case. The HD55S draws 471 W, so if the compressor ran 12 hours in a day it would use 5.7 kWh, about $0.98. The Sandidry Pro 35C draws 266 W, about $0.55 for the same 12 hours. A sealed crawl space usually needs far less run time after the first weeks of drying out, and the cost to run calculator shows the math at your state's rate.

Frequently asked questions

What size dehumidifier do I need for a crawl space?

For up to about 1,000 sq ft, a 35 pint AHAM unit (70 pints at saturation) such as the AlorAir Helios D35. For 1,300 to 1,500 sq ft, a 55 pint AHAM unit such as the AlorAir Sentinel HD55S or Argendon Sandidry 55C. For up to 1,800 sq ft, a 60 pint AHAM unit such as the Argendon Shield 60. Size up one class if the floor is not fully covered or the space already smells musty.

Can I use a regular dehumidifier in a crawl space?

It is a poor fit. Portable dehumidifiers have buckets, are tall, are built for living-space temperatures and lose capacity in cool air. Crawl space units are low and compact, drain continuously, have auto defrost for cold coils, and come with longer warranties, 5 to 6 years on the units in this guide.

Do I need a vapor barrier before adding a dehumidifier?

Yes. Bare soil keeps releasing water vapor and open vents bring in humid outdoor air, so a dehumidifier in an unsealed crawl space runs nonstop and may never reach its set point. Cover the ground with a sealed vapor barrier, tape the seams, close the vents, and then add the dehumidifier.

What humidity should a crawl space be?

Most owners set crawl space units to 50 to 55 percent relative humidity. The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent to limit mold growth, and a crawl space held in the low 50s stays well under that. Setting it much lower adds run time and cost without much benefit.

Do crawl space dehumidifiers need a pump?

Only if the water cannot run downhill to a drain, sump or outside. If it can, a gravity unit is simpler. If it cannot, buy a unit with a built-in pump, such as the Argendon Sandidry 55C or AlorAir Galaxy 60P, which lift water 19.6 ft per their makers, or add a separate condensate pump like the Little Giant VCMA-15ULST.

How much does it cost to run a crawl space dehumidifier?

Roughly $20 a month to remove 20 pints a day with an efficient unit. At 2.4 liters per kWh that is about 3.9 kWh a day, $0.68 at the 17.3 cent US average rate. A 471 W unit running its compressor 12 hours costs about $0.98 that day, and run time drops once a sealed crawl space has dried out.

What is the difference between AHAM and saturation pints?

AHAM pints are measured at 80 F and 60 percent humidity; saturation pints in hot, nearly saturated air, such as 90 F and 90 percent. Saturation figures run two to two and a half times the AHAM figure, so the AlorAir Sentinel HD55S is 55 pints AHAM and 120 at saturation. Always compare units on AHAM pints.

Is a Santa Fe crawl space dehumidifier worth the price?

It is worth it for a large or ducted crawl space. The Compact70 is Energy Star Most Efficient 2024 at 4.1 pints per kWh, covers about 2,200 sq ft of moderately sealed crawl space, is 12 inches tall and accepts ducting, hang and pump kits. For a typical crawl space under 1,500 sq ft, a 55 pint AlorAir or Argendon does the job for about a third of the price.
