Water damage is the claim that happens to normal homes. The Insurance Information Institute counts 1.5 water damage and freezing claims per 100 insured homes a year, about 1 in 67, at an average of $15,400 each.

Spread over every home, that is about $231 of expected water damage per home per year. A LexisNexis study of 2,306 homes, run with Moen, found homes with a Flo automatic shutoff had 96% fewer water claims the year after installation.
If you have a finished basement, travel, or own a second home, an automatic shutoff like the Moen Flo (around $624) is cheap insurance. If you only want warnings, a Govee sensor 3-pack (under $100) under the sinks and water heater gets you most of the early alerts.

The expected-loss math
Frequency x severity: 1.5 claims per 100 homes x $15,400 = about $231 per home per year in water damage that insurers pay out.
Your own cost is the deductible, the hassle, and what a claim does to future premiums, not the whole $15,400. But the damage still happens to the house, and a prevented leak is a prevented deductible.
If a shutoff cut that risk by the 96% the LexisNexis study found, it would avoid about $222 of expected damage a year, more than a third of the price of a Moen Flo. Keep in mind the study was done with Moen and measured claims, not every leak.
Automatic shutoff vs sensors
A shutoff valve on the main line stops the water itself. It matters most when nobody is home: on vacation, at work, or in a rental or second home.
Battery sensors only alarm. They are perfect for the spots leaks start (water heater, washing machine, under sinks, sump pit) when someone is usually home to hear them.
Some insurers offer discounts or install programs for shutoff valves; Stand Insurance and Liberty Mutual both run Moen Flo programs. None publish a discount percentage, so ask yours.

Frequently asked questions
How common is water damage in a home?
The Insurance Information Institute reports 1.5 water damage and freezing claims per 100 insured homes per year from 2019 to 2023, about 1 in 67 homes, with an average claim of $15,400.
Do smart water shutoff valves work?
A LexisNexis study of 2,306 homes with a Flo by Moen shutoff found 96% fewer water claims and 72% lower claim severity in the year after installation compared with similar homes nearby. Moen worked with LexisNexis on the study.
Can I install a water shutoff valve myself?
The Moen Flo and Phyn Plus are cut into the main water line, so a plumber is recommended. Clamp-on valve robots that turn an existing ball valve are a no-cut alternative.
Will my insurance give me a discount for a leak detector?
Some will. Stand Insurance offers premium discounts for an active Moen Flo, and Liberty Mutual runs a Moen savings and install program, but no insurer publishes a set percentage. Ask yours before you buy.
How much money does a smart water shutoff save?
About $222 a year in avoided water damage on average. Expected damage is 1.5 claims per 100 homes x $15,400 = about $231 per home per year, and the LexisNexis study found 96% fewer claims with a Flo, so 96% of $231 is about $222. What you personally save is mostly the deductible and the effect on future premiums, and the case is stronger with a finished basement, frequent travel or a second home.
Are water leak sensors worth it without a shutoff valve?
Yes, if someone is usually home to act on the alarm. The Govee 3-pack gives three sensors with 105 dB alarms plus a Wi-Fi gateway for app, SMS and email alerts, but it cannot stop the water. Put them at the water heater, washing machine, under sinks and in the sump pit, where leaks often start.
Does homeowners insurance cover water damage?
Standard homeowners policies generally cover sudden and accidental water damage, such as a burst pipe, but not damage from a slow leak left unrepaired or from flooding. Flood coverage is a separate policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private insurer. Check your policy wording and your deductible.
What size water shutoff valve do I need?
Match it to your main water line. The Moen Flo comes in 3/4 in (900-001) and 1 in (900-006) versions, and the Phyn Plus (2nd gen) handles mains up to 1-1/4 in with adapters sold separately. Measure the pipe near your main shutoff before you buy.
Can a smart shutoff valve prevent frozen pipe damage?
It limits the damage but does not stop pipes from freezing. If a frozen pipe bursts, the leak triggers the shutoff and stops the water, and the Moen Flo also monitors water temperature. To prevent the freeze itself, insulate pipes in unheated spaces and keep the heat on, no lower than 55 F per the American Red Cross.
Should I turn off my main water when I go on vacation?
Closing the main valve before a trip is free and stops a burst hose or pipe from running for days. An automatic shutoff such as the Moen Flo does the same thing when nobody remembers, and it also catches leaks while you are home.
