How Much Does Heated Flooring Cost to Run?

By Marcus Reed. Updated Oct 13, 2026. Picks come from published specs and our sizing math. Some links pay us a commission, and each one says so.

A heated bathroom floor costs less than most people expect. A standard electric mat draws 12 watts per square foot. A 50 sq ft mat (600 W) running 6 hours a day uses 3.6 kWh, about 62 cents a day or $19 a month at the US average of 17.3 cents per kWh.

The rule of thumb is about 38 cents per heated square foot per month at 6 hours a day. A 20 sq ft mat in a small bath is about $8 a month, a 40 sq ft kitchen run about $15.

The cheapest way in is a kit with the thermostat included. The LuxHeat kits ship with an OJ Microline programmable GFCI thermostat, so you only buy one box.

The math: watts x hours x your rate

Watts: heated square feet x 12 W. Daily kWh: watts x hours on / 1,000. Monthly cost: daily kWh x 30.4 x your rate.

50 sq ft: 600 W x 6 h = 3.6 kWh a day, $0.62 a day, $19 a month. 40 sq ft: 480 W, 2.9 kWh, $15 a month. 20 sq ft: 240 W, 1.4 kWh, $8 a month. All at 17.3 cents per kWh.

WarmlyYours, a floor heating maker, publishes the same method: 35 heated sq ft at 12 W, 6 hours a day and 12 cents per kWh comes to $9.07 a month. Your rate is the biggest variable. Plug your state's rate into our cost-to-run calculator.

Size the mat to the floor you stand on

Heat only the open floor. Mats do not go under the vanity, toilet or tub, so a 50 sq ft bathroom often takes a 30 to 40 sq ft mat (WarmlyYours' example heats 35 of 50 sq ft). Measure the open area, then pick the kit size just under it.

A 120V thermostat rated 15 A handles up to 1,800 W, about 150 sq ft of 12 W mat. Larger rooms go to 240V or a second thermostat.

The thermostat is what keeps the bill down

A programmable floor thermostat runs the mat only around the times you use the room: an hour before you wake, an hour in the evening. Warmup says a mat over plywood takes about 30 minutes to warm from 60 F to 80 F, so there is no reason to leave it on all day.

Adaptive start (on the OJ UDG4) learns how long your floor takes to warm and starts it just early enough. Energy monitoring (on the Nuheat Home) shows the real kWh, so you can replace our estimate with your number.

Tile installers: the membrane option

If you are already laying tile over an uncoupling membrane, Schluter DITRA-HEAT puts the heating cable inside the membrane. It costs more than a mat kit and needs a separate thermostat, but it is one layer instead of two.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to run heated floors?

About 38 cents per heated square foot per month at 6 hours a day and the US average of 17.3 cents per kWh. A 50 sq ft mat (600 W) is about $19 a month, a 20 sq ft mat about $8.

How many watts does a heated floor use?

Standard electric floor heating mats are rated 12 watts per square foot, so a 40 sq ft mat draws 480 W. Some cable systems run 15 W per sq ft.

Is it expensive to leave heated floors on all day?

Running 24 hours instead of 6 roughly quadruples the cost, to about $1.50 per heated sq ft a month at the US average rate. The thermostat cycles once the floor is warm, so the real number is lower, but a schedule is the easiest saving.

Can I install heated floors myself?

Laying the mat is a common DIY job under tile. The thermostat connects to a dedicated circuit, and many codes require an electrician for that part. Check your local rules.

How long does a heated floor take to warm up?

About 30 minutes to go from 60 F to 80 F for a mat over plywood, according to Warmup. Over a concrete slab it takes longer because the slab soaks up heat. A programmable thermostat set to start an hour before you use the room covers it, and adaptive start on the OJ UDG4 learns the lead time for you.

What size heated floor mat do I need for my bathroom?

Measure only the open floor you walk on, because mats do not go under the vanity, toilet or tub. A 50 sq ft bathroom often takes a 30 to 40 sq ft mat. Pick the kit size just under the open area, and never cut the heating wire to make a mat fit.

Does a 240V heated floor cost less to run than 120V?

No. Cost depends on watts, not volts, and a standard mat is 12 W per sq ft either way. 240V halves the current, so one thermostat can carry more mat: the OJ UDG4 handles 1,800 W at 120V or 3,600 W at 240V. That is why rooms over about 150 sq ft of heated floor go to 240V.

Is a heated floor cheaper to run than a space heater?

Per hour, usually. A 50 sq ft mat draws 600 W, about 10 cents an hour at 17.3 cents per kWh, against about 26 cents for a 1,500 W space heater. At 6 hours a day that is about $19 a month for the mat and about $47 for the heater running flat out. The mat warms the floor you stand on and is not sized to heat a whole cold room.

Do heated floors need a dedicated circuit?

Not always, but the circuit must carry the load. A 40 sq ft mat at 480 W draws 4 A at 120V. The NEC treats fixed electric heat as a continuous load sized at 125 percent, so a 20 A circuit carries up to 16 A, about 1,920 W. Floor heating in bathrooms needs GFCI protection, which is why each thermostat on this page has a built-in Class A GFCI.

Is a heated bathroom floor worth it?

The running cost is small: about $8 a month for a 20 sq ft mat and about $19 for a 50 sq ft mat at 6 hours a day and the US average rate. The cheapest time to add one is when you are already retiling, because the mat goes in the thin-set under the tile. A kit with the thermostat included means one box to buy.
