A big tank is mostly a weight and water-movement problem. A 75 gallon weighs about 900 lb set up and a 150 about 1,600 lb before rock, so the stand and the floor come first. Then the filter has to turn the real water volume over 4 to 6 times an hour for fish, more for plants, at its loaded flow, not the number on the box.

Heat is the biggest monthly cost and the biggest risk. Size it at about 3 W per gallon for a 10 F lift and split it between two heaters, so a heater stuck on warms the tank slowly and a dead one still leaves half the heat. On large systems a controller with its own probe is cheap insurance.
The picks below are grouped the way you buy them. Our aquarium calculator works out your gallons, weight, flow, heater watts and running cost, and matches parts that fit your tank.

Canister filters: size them by loaded flow
Canister labels list pump flow with no media and no hoses. Fluval publishes both numbers for the 407: 383 GPH on the pump and 245 GPH through loaded media, about 64%. Plan on two thirds of the label.
For fish, 5 turnovers an hour is the middle of the usual 4 to 6. A 55 gallon holding about 51 gallons of water needs about 254 GPH at the tank, so look for 390 GPH or more on the box. A 75 gallon planted tank at 7x needs about 720 on the box, and a 125 gallon at 5x about 800.
On tanks of 6 ft and longer, two canisters at opposite ends beat one big one: no dead corner, and the tank keeps filtering while you clean one.

Heaters: two smaller beats one big
Heat takes about 0.3 W per gallon for each degree F the tank sits above the room. A 75 gallon of fish 8 F over a 70 F room needs about 160 W; sized for a cold night at a 10 F lift it is about 200 W, which two 100 W heaters cover.
Two heaters split the risk. If a thermostat sticks on, half the wattage warms the tank half as fast, which gives you time to catch it. If one dies, the other holds the temperature up. On anything over about 75 gallons, add a plug-in controller with its own probe so a stuck heater gets cut off.
Big systems and sumps often use titanium elements, which have no thermostat and must run through a controller.

Lights that span the tank
A fish tank light only has to look good and run on a timer; buy one whose brackets fit your tank length. Long tanks take two fixtures end to end: two 30 to 36 in lights cover a 6 ft tank.
Planted tanks need real light at the substrate: about 15 to 30 PAR for anubias and ferns, 30 to 50 for most stem plants, and 50 or more for carpets. A planted-spectrum fixture like the Fluval Plant 3.0 reaches the middle range on a 21 in tall tank.

Stands rated for the filled weight
Match the stand top to the tank footprint and its rating to the filled weight with room to spare. A 75 or 90 gallon on a 48 x 18 footprint weighs 900 to 1,250 lb with water, substrate and rock, more than many 48 in stands are rated for.
Shim the stand level before filling, keep it off carpet if you can, and on a wood floor set the tank across the joists near a load-bearing wall.

Tanks: starfire and overflow for the big builds
Past about 90 gallons most builders go rimless, low-iron (starfire) glass with a built-in overflow, and put the filtration in a sump under the tank. The glass gets thick: 12 mm on 24 in tall tanks and 15 mm above 30 in.
These drilled tanks ship with bulkheads and plumbing kits; budget for the sump, the return pump and the stand. Our calculator sizes the return for a sump instead of a canister when you tick it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best canister filter for a 75 gallon tank?
One rated about 550 to 750 GPH on the box, because canisters deliver about two thirds of their label once the media loads. The Fluval FX4 at 700 GPH fits most 75 gallon fish tanks; a planted 75 at 7 turnovers an hour wants the FX6.
How many heaters does a large aquarium need?
Two, splitting the total. Size the total at about 3 W per gallon for a 10 F lift above the room, so about 225 W for a 75 gallon, as two 100 to 150 W heaters. Add a plug-in controller with its own probe on bigger tanks.
How much does a 125 gallon aquarium weigh?
About 1,250 to 1,400 lb set up with water, glass, substrate and stand, more with rock. The water alone is about 880 lb.
Is a sump better than a canister on a big tank?
On reefs and on tanks over about 120 gallons, usually: a sump adds water volume, hides heaters and equipment, and is easier to service. It needs a drilled tank or an overflow and a return pump. On a freshwater 55 to 125 one or two canisters are simpler.
How much does a large aquarium cost to run?
Mostly heat. A 75 gallon planted tank 6 F above the room runs about $15 a month at the US average rate; a 125 gallon 10 F above a cold room about $29. Our calculator works it out for your tank and state.
