Best Indoor Greenhouse and Grow Tent Kits for Vegetables, Herbs and Seedlings

By Marcus Reed. Updated Oct 14, 2026. Picks come from published specs and our sizing math. Some links pay us a commission, and each one says so.

An indoor greenhouse comes in two forms. A wire shelf with a clear cover, grow lights and heat mats starts seeds for the spring garden. A grow tent with a reflective lining, an LED light and an exhaust fan grows lettuce, herbs, tomatoes and peppers to harvest, all year.

Our picks at a glance

From published specs and our sizing rules. Not lab tested.

  • 1

    Most common tent

AC Infinity CLOUDLAB 844 Grow Tent 4x4

4x4 ft tent, 80 in tall

  • 2

    Light for a 4x4

AC Infinity IONBOARD S44 LED Grow Light 4x4

    430 watt LED, 4x4

  • 3

    Exhaust fan up to 4x4

    165 CFM, 4 in duct

  • 4

    Seed starting shelf

Pure Garden 4 Tier Mini Greenhouse

    4 tier seed shelf

Size it by what you grow and how many plants. Seedlings need the least light, leafy greens about half again as much, and tomatoes and peppers about two and a half times as much as seedlings. A tent then needs a light made for its footprint and a fan whose duct fits one of its ports.

The parts below come from one maker per setup so they fit: AC Infinity tents, lights and fans share duct sizes and controllers. Our grow tent sizer does the math for your plant count, light hours and electricity rate.

Seed starting: a shelf, T5 lights and heat mats

For spring starts you do not need a tent. A 4-tier shelf holds one standard 1020 tray per tier, which is 72 seedlings in a 72-cell insert. Hang two 2 ft T5 LED bars under the tier above each tray and keep them 3 to 6 inches over the seedlings.

A heat mat under each tray holds the soil warm so peppers and tomatoes come up in days. Roll the clear cover up while the lights are on: it holds humidity for germination, but shop-style LED bars are not made for a wet enclosure.

Four trays with 80 W of lights for 16 hours a day and four heat mats run about $12 a month at the US average rate.

Small tents for greens, herbs or one tomato: 2x2 and 2x4

A 2x2 ft tent that is 6 ft tall holds one tomato or pepper plant, or about 8 heads of lettuce. A 2x4 fits along a wall and holds two fruiting plants or about 16 greens.

Leafy greens need about 260 PPFD on a 16 hour day, so a 2x4 of lettuce uses only about 90 W of the light's 220. Dim it and the tent costs about $10 a month to run.

Vegetables all winter: 3x3 and 4x4

Tomatoes and peppers want a daily light integral of about 20 to 30. On a 16 hour day that is about 430 PPFD, or roughly 300 W of LED over a 4x4. The 4x4 is the common choice for four plants, and its 80 inch height leaves room for the light above full-grown tomatoes.

A 4x4 holds about 107 cubic feet of air. Replacing it once a minute, plus 25% for ducting and a carbon filter, takes about 134 CFM, which a 165 CFM 4 inch fan covers on a middle speed.

The biggest home garden: 5x5

A 5x5 holds six fruiting plants in 5 gallon pots. It takes about 470 W of light on a 16 hour day and about 210 CFM of exhaust, more than a 4 inch fan moves, so it steps up to an 8 inch fan in one of the tent's 8 inch ports.

Expect about $48 a month to run at the US average rate. A shorter light day does not cut that much: to give the plants the same daily total in 12 hours, the light has to run brighter for each of them.

Or buy a complete kit

Complete kits put a tent, an LED and an exhaust fan in one box, so there is nothing to match. You give up choosing each part, and the bundled light is often smaller than a separate one for the same footprint, so check its watts against what our sizer says you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best indoor greenhouse for starting seeds?

A 4-tier shelf with a clear cover, two 2 ft T5 LED bars over each tray, and a heat mat under each tray. It costs far less than a grow tent and holds four standard 1020 trays, or 288 seedlings in 72-cell inserts.

What size grow tent do I need for vegetables?

Count plants. Makers rate a 2x2 for 1 plant in a 5 gallon pot, a 2x4 or 3x3 for 2, a 4x4 for 4 and a 5x5 for 6. Leafy greens fit about 2 per square foot, so 12 heads of lettuce fit a 2x4.

How much does it cost to run an indoor greenhouse?

Light watts x hours x 30 x your rate, plus the fan all day. At 17.3 cents per kWh, a seed starting shelf with 4 trays is about $12 a month, a 2x4 of greens about $10, a 4x4 of tomatoes about $27 and a 5x5 about $48.

Can you grow tomatoes indoors in winter?

Yes, under enough light. Tomatoes want a daily light integral of about 20 to 30 mol/m2/day, roughly 430 PPFD for 16 hours, far more than a sunny window gives in winter. Use a tent at least 6 ft tall and choose compact or determinate varieties for small tents.

Do grow tents smell or need a carbon filter?

Tomato plants have a strong scent, and a closed tent concentrates it, so many growers add a carbon filter on the exhaust. Our fan sizing adds 25% for a filter and ducting so the fan still moves enough air with one attached.

Is a grow tent better than grow lights on a shelf?

For plants grown to harvest, yes: the reflective lining returns light that would hit the walls, and the fan controls heat and humidity. For seedlings that move outside in a few weeks, a shelf is cheaper and works fine.

How high should a grow light hang?

Seedlings under T5 bars: 3 to 6 inches. LED boards over tomatoes and peppers: usually 18 to 24 inches above the canopy, closer for greens on a dimmed light. Follow the maker's chart for your light and raise it as the plants grow.

Why do the tent, light and fan need to match?

A light made for a smaller footprint leaves dim corners, and a fan only fits a tent that has a port of its duct size. The AC Infinity 4x4 and 5x5 tents have 4 and 8 inch ports but no 6 inch ports, for example, so a 6 inch fan would need an adapter.
