Best Fireproof Safe for Home Documents: Fire Rating, Size and Lock

By Marcus Reed. Updated Oct 13, 2026. Picks come from published specs and our sizing math. Some links pay us a commission, and each one says so.

A fire safe is rated by how long it keeps the inside below 350 F, the point where paper starts to suffer, while a furnace heats the outside. UL tests a 1-hour safe at 1700 F and a half-hour box at 1550 F. That rating is the number to compare first.

Both are ETL verified to survive a 15 foot fall during a fire and remain closed, and to protect contents for 24 hours in water up to 8 inches deep.

Frequently asked questions

What fire rating should a home safe have?

Get at least a UL 1-hour rating for a home safe. UL 72 Class 350 means the inside stays below 350 F during the test, which protects paper; the 1-hour test heats the outside to 1700 F. A half-hour rating, tested at 1550 F, suits a document box that sits in a less exposed spot.

What size fireproof safe do I need?

Measure what goes in and add room for growth. A 0.36 cu ft document box holds files and passports; a 1.2 cu ft safe adds room for jewelry, cash, drives and a stack of folders; 2 cu ft holds binders standing up in a 19.6 inch tall interior. Letter paper is 8.5 x 11 inches, so check that both interior width and depth exceed that.

Are fireproof safes really fireproof?

No safe is fireproof forever; they are fire resistant for a rated time. A UL 1-hour rating means the inside stayed below 350 F for 1 hour at 1700 F, followed by cooling in the closed furnace. Longer fires or hotter spots can exceed that.

Will a fireproof safe protect USB drives and hard drives?

Not always. A Class 350 rating protects paper, but digital media fails at much lower temperatures, which is why UL has separate Class 125 ratings for media. SentrySafe states its 1-hour models keep interior temperatures safe for DVDs and USBs. For important files, keep a second copy offsite or in the cloud as well.

Is a fireproof safe also waterproof?

Only if it carries a water rating. The SentrySafe 1-hour models here are ETL verified for 24 hours in water up to 8 inches deep, which covers firehose runoff and minor flooding. The CHW30220 document box is ETL verified for 72 hours of full submersion.

Can a burglar break into a fireproof safe?

Fire safes are built to resist heat, not determined prying, and most carry no burglary rating. Bolting the safe to the floor stops someone carrying it away; both 1-hour picks here include bolt-down hardware and live-locking bolts. Keep a small document box hidden.

Where should I put a fireproof safe at home?

Bolt it to the floor in a closet or other spot out of sight, ideally on a ground floor. Avoid low spots that flood beyond the water rating. Allow door clearance; the STW123GDC needs 14.75 inches to open fully.

Digital keypad or dial combination safe?

A keypad opens faster and lets you set your own code, but it runs on batteries; the STW123GDC uses four AAA batteries and has a backup key. A dial needs no batteries and has no electronics to fail. The SFW205CWB uses a preset dial combination.

Why is the inside of my fire safe damp?

Fire safe insulation holds moisture by design, which turns to steam in a fire and keeps the inside cool. In a closed safe that moisture can raise humidity. A desiccant pack and opening the safe now and then keep paper and metal dry.

How heavy is a home fireproof safe?

The 1.23 cu ft SentrySafe STW123GDC weighs 86.7 pounds, and the 0.36 cu ft CHW30220 document box weighs 24 pounds. Larger 2 cu ft floor safes weigh more, so plan on two people to move one. The weight comes mostly from the fire insulation in the walls.
