Best Snow Blower by Driveway Size: Single Stage, Two Stage, Battery or Gas

By Marcus Reed. Updated Oct 28, 2026. Picks come from published specs and our sizing math. Some links pay us a commission, and each one says so.

Pick the stage first and the width second. A single-stage blower has an auger that touches the pavement and throws the snow itself, so it suits a paved driveway with storms under about 8 in and no plow pile. Gravel, deeper storms, heavy wet snow, the packed berm the street plow leaves, or a steep driveway all call for a two stage, whose auger feeds an impeller and whose housing rides on skid shoes above the surface.

    24 in clearing width

  • 4

    Two stage without gas

    EGO Power+ SNT2405 24 in Two-Stage Snow Blower

    24 in clearing width

Then match the width to the area. Our calculator's bands are 18 in under 800 sq ft, 20 in up to 1,600, 21 in up to 3,000, 24 in up to 6,000 and 28 in beyond, and two stage starts at 24 in. At a 1 mph walking pace with 15 percent overlap and 25 percent added for turns, a 20 in blower clears a 600 sq ft two-car driveway in about 6 minutes, and a 24 in two stage clears 2,000 sq ft in about 17.

The short answer: a corded 20 in single stage for a short paved driveway near an outlet, a battery single stage for a two to four-car paved driveway, and a 24 in two stage, gas or battery, for gravel, the plow pile or anything past 3,000 sq ft.

Single stage or two stage

A single stage is lighter, cheaper and folds flat, and because its rubber-tipped auger touches the ground it clears down to bare pavement. It is the right machine for a paved driveway that gets typical storms of 8 in or less with no plow berm. Its intake is 10 to 13 in tall, so a deeper storm means two passes or going out mid-storm.

Move to a two stage if any of these is true: the driveway is gravel (a single-stage auger picks up stones and throws them), storms run past 8 in, the snow is heavy and wet past 6 in, the street plow leaves a packed pile at the end, the driveway is steep enough that you want a self-propelled drive, or the area is 3,000 sq ft or more. Two-stage intakes are 20 to 21 in tall.

Three-stage blowers add an accelerator auger ahead of the impeller. They are sold through dealers and home centers rather than Amazon, and our calculator points to them only for storms of 18 in or more or lake-effect winters with a long driveway and a plow berm. A 28 in or wider two stage does most of the same work.

Clearing width by driveway size and time to clear

Measure the area: length times width, or 200 sq ft per car space (10 x 20 ft), plus walks at 4 ft wide. A typical two-car driveway is 400 to 600 sq ft; a 60 x 20 ft four-car driveway with 40 ft of walk is 1,360 sq ft.

Time to clear is area divided by the clearing width times 85 percent for overlap times your pace, plus 25 percent for turns and chute changes. At 1.0 mph: 400 sq ft takes about 4.5 minutes with an 18 in blower, 1,000 sq ft about 9.5 minutes with a 21 in, 2,000 sq ft about 17 minutes with a 24 in and 4,000 sq ft about 27 minutes with a 30 in. In deep or heavy wet snow we slow the pace to 0.6 mph, which turns a 2,400 sq ft gravel driveway into about 33 minutes with a 24 in two stage.

Width saves the most time on big areas. On 3,000 sq ft, going from 24 in to 30 in cuts about 25 minutes to about 20. On a 600 sq ft driveway the difference between 20 and 22 in is about half a minute, so buy for the stage and power you need rather than the extra inches.

Short paved driveways and walks: corded

A corded blower is the cheapest way to clear a short paved driveway, walks, a deck or a porch, with no gas to store and no batteries to keep warm. Snow Joe says not to run its corded blowers on more than 100 ft of extension cord, so our calculator only suggests corded when the far end of the driveway is within 100 ft of an outlet.

Both corded models here are single stage, so they are out for gravel, storms past their 10 to 13 in intake and the plow pile.

Battery single stage: how much battery you need

EGO is the one maker that publishes area per charge at a stated depth: 10 to 32 cars of 8 in snow, depending on the batteries included. That averages about 45 Wh per 200 sq ft car space, which our calculator uses for brands that publish no claim. Scale it by depth (4 in costs half, 16 in double) and by snow type: we use 1.5x for heavy wet snow and 0.8x for powder.

Worked out: a 600 sq ft driveway of 6 in average snow needs about 100 Wh, half of the Greenworks 40V kit's single 200 Wh battery. A 1,000 sq ft driveway at 8 in needs about 225 Wh, which is more than one 40V battery (plan a spare) but about half a charge of the EGO SNT2122, which EGO rates at 10 cars per charge. The Greenworks 80V 22 in is rated at up to 6 cars per charge; Greenworks gives no depth for that claim, and our calculator treats it as 8 in.

Store the batteries indoors. Greenworks says a battery stored cold may not start the blower and to let it warm to room temperature.

Gravel, the plow pile and deep snow: gas two stage

A gas two stage is the cheapest way into a 24 in machine with a 20 in intake and a self-propelled drive. On gravel, raise the skid shoes so the scraper bar rides about 1/2 in above the stones, and wait until the ground is frozen or snow-packed before the first pass.

The 24 and 26 in machines we list use 208 to 212cc engines, which covers a typical two to four-car driveway. For 26 in and wider in heavy wet snow or with a plow berm, our rule is 250cc or more, which is where the 302cc Massimo fits.

Gas means oil changes, fuel stabilizer and yearly upkeep. Keep spare shear pins: they break on purpose when the auger hits a rock, ice chunk or newspaper, saving the gearbox.

Two stage on battery: EGO

EGO's two-stage blowers are self-propelled with 20 to 21 in intakes, so our calculator treats them like a gas two stage for gravel and the plow pile, with no engine upkeep. EGO rates them at 18, 24 and 32 cars of 8 in snow per charge, about 3,600, 4,800 and 6,400 sq ft.

Deep or heavy snow uses more battery. A 2,400 sq ft gravel driveway of 12 in heavy wet snow needs about 1,215 Wh by our scaling, around 1.5 charges of the SNT2405, so our calculator adds a spare EGO 2-pack. The SNT2416 and SNT2807 carry more battery and need fewer top-ups.

What to buy with it

Driveway markers go in before the ground freezes: stakes every 10 ft along both edges show you and the plow where the driveway ends, and on gravel they keep you from blowing stones into the lawn. A cover protects a blower that lives outside or under a deck. A pusher shovel handles the steps and corners, and a pet-safe melt deals with the thin layer a blower leaves behind.

Frequently asked questions

What size snow blower do I need for a two-car driveway?

A two-car driveway is about 400 to 600 sq ft. If it is paved, gets storms under 8 in and has no plow pile, an 18 to 21 in single stage clears it in about 4 to 6 minutes. Gravel, deeper storms or a plow berm call for a 24 in two stage.

Single stage or two stage snow blower?

Single stage for paved driveways with storms under about 8 in: the auger touches the pavement and throws the snow. Two stage for gravel, deep or heavy wet snow, the plow berm, steep driveways and areas of 3,000 sq ft or more: the auger feeds an impeller and the housing rides on skid shoes.

Can you use a single stage snow blower on gravel?

No. A single-stage auger scrapes the surface, so it picks up stones and throws them. Use a two stage with the skid shoes set so the scraper bar rides about 1/2 in above the gravel, and wait until the ground is frozen or packed for the first pass.

Is a battery snow blower as good as gas?

For a paved driveway with typical storms, yes, as long as the battery covers your area. EGO's two-stage battery blowers have the same 20 to 21 in intakes and self-propelled drive as gas two stages and are rated at 18 to 32 cars of 8 in snow per charge. Gas still costs less for a 24 in two stage and never runs out mid-storm.

How many batteries do I need for a cordless snow blower?

Use the maker's claim where there is one. EGO rates its blowers at 10 to 32 cars of 8 in snow per charge. For brands without a claim we use about 45 Wh per 200 sq ft at 8 in. Double the depth, or switch to heavy wet snow, and you need roughly 1.5 to 2 times the battery.

How long does it take to snow blow a driveway?

Area divided by clearing width times pace, with 15 percent overlap and 25 percent for turns. At about 1 mph a 20 in blower clears 600 sq ft in about 6 minutes, a 24 in two stage clears 2,000 sq ft in about 17, and in heavy wet snow a 24 in machine takes about 33 minutes for 2,400 sq ft.

What cc engine do I need on a gas snow blower?

The 24 and 26 in two-stage blowers we list run 208 to 212cc engines, which is enough for a typical two to four-car driveway. For 26 in and wider in heavy wet snow or with a plow berm, look for 250cc or more; the 30 in Massimo runs 302cc.

Is a corded electric snow blower worth it?

For a short paved driveway and walks within 100 ft of an outlet, yes. They cost the least and need no gas or batteries. Snow Joe says not to use more than 100 ft of extension cord, and they are single stage, so not for gravel, deep snow or the plow pile.
